It’s not sexy, but is Ross Stripling a good fit?

Riddle me this, give up the pick for Eovaldi, or trade Mullins for Lopez.  I'd say they're similar quality, but you have to get rid of one piece.  What do you get rid of?

At this point, I can't see getting rid of Mullins seeing as we're not going to improve the team dramatically this off-season. I would view giving up the pick as the lesser evil right now.

But I do like Lopez more than Eovaldi.

If those are the choices you sign Eovaldi although I like Lopez better too.   In the short term a Mullins for Lopez is robbing Peter to pay Paul.   It's hard to see it as a net gain.     I leave it to Elias to figure a way to get Lopez or someone similar using depth and not someone who we would have difficulty replacing.

Sell me on Eovaldi because I'm struggling to get past having to give up a pick for him. I feel like he's always been hit or miss in the AL East.

I forgot that Eovaldi received a QO, so that is a drawback.  I think Stripling had a career year and is unlikely to replicate his success, whereas Eovaldi had a slightly down year and, assuming he is healthy (which is a big assumption), is more likely to put up better numbers in '23.  If you look at recent performance beyond just last season, I think Eovaldi's statcast numbers are generally superior, if only slightly.

That, plus his better Whiff %, velocity and (again slight) younger age, gives him the advantage IMO.

I'd trade Mullins myself.  But I'm down more on Mullins than most here are.  I think he further regresses next year.

Maybe, but his first two months were his worst and his 2nd half was stronger than his first half.

2/25 for a guy who had a 2.92era in 24 starts with Toronto last year. I am starting to wonder if Elias will ever give anyone a multi-year deal.

First we heard that the O's were "big game shopping" for pitching.  Then we heard that they wouldn't go above 3 years on a deal.  Now Bassitt has signed for 3 years, while Stripling and Manaea have signed for two, and our most recent story on mlbtraderumors is almost a week old because we ain't doin' nothin'.

If the year is just one then...

"It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to October, we were all going direct to the lottery..."

Somewhere in the primordial pitching ooze between Stripling and Gibson lies the one year border.

That is true, though he still wasn't great, having a OPS of .754 after the All Star break.  That OPS over a whole season would have ranked him about 70th in the league or so.  I think that looking back we will really wish we traded him last year, when he was coming off likely the best year he will ever have, or this offseason, when he still maybe carried so much surplus value.  I'm just not a solid believer in him being a key player for us over the next handful of years, and would like to get the most value for him.  If the idea is to draft just position players and then flip the excess into arms, now is the time to start that process.  I'd be trying to move a combination of Mullins, Mateo, Urias, Hays and Mountcastle if any of those carried sufficient value to justify trading them.  I doubt any of them do though, other than Mullins and maybe Mateo.

I think we're close to getting to that point but Cedric's replacement, whether that's Cowser, Fabian, Haskins, or whoever (dare I say Cameron), doesn't appear ready yet.   If we had an Ortiz or Westburg type CF, it would make more sense to move Mullins now.   He'll still have 2 service years left after this year.   Hopefully, he'll have a solid year.    I think the league adjusted to him a bit but he seemed to right the ship in the 2nd half.   We'll never see the 30/30 Mullins but I think the 15/30 or 20/30 version still has a good chance of happening in 2023.
