Can someone help me understand why Holliday is still getting at bats if he was sent to minor league camp last week?

They can and do call over minor leaguers to fill out bench spots in spring training games, especially on the road, even if the player is in MiL camp.  Conversely, they can have major league players go play in a game in minor league camp if they choose.

Two part answer coming...

Before yesterday's game most starters played 5 or 6 innings and were removed for lower/alternate 'prospects' depending on position and score.  Based on subs not coming in until AFTER the starters received 3 or 4 Plate Appearances, this is when the subs/alternates come in.   They put Jackson in to run for the starter Vavra after he reached in the 8th.

The other 'prospects' that were moved to MiLB camp are now getting more consistent ABs in the AA/AAA games so they will bring up some guys from A/AA to fill at end of games.

Now part 2...  Since they are bringing up Jackson, I think they are going to place him in Delmarva and if he hits early and often, move him to Aberdeen.  He will be playing/hitting at least 5 if not all 6 games a week at the top 2 spots to get him 4 AB's a game minimum.  in 4 weeks he could easily have 100 PA and move be early May.  If he continues, there is no reason he couldn't get into Bowie by end of year.

There is a chance that they believe so much in this kid they want to start him at Aberdeen.   If he struggles its a good thing.......let the kid have to make adjustments.   I dont think he stays in Aberdeen for more than half the season.   I would bet they have him in Bowie by the midseason.

I could see them even giving him a little taste of the last two weeks or so in Norfolk.

I think when Jackson said at his press conference when he signed that he thought he could make the majors in 2 years was his goal.   I think Elias will give him all the chances to do just that.  I dont think they will monkey with his service time or be slow to start his clock.

I think if he can hit, hit, hit the Orioles will move him up very quick.

What is the historical comparison you are using?

I'm not CoC, but Gunnar Henderson in '21 seems like a comp, going Delmarva - Aberdeen - Bowie in one season after starting '19 in the GCL. That being said, Gunnar also had the benefit of the '20 alternate site work before that.

I think he starts at Delmarva from what I'm reading.    It sounds like there might be a chance for 17 year old Luis (Aiden) Almeyda to start there as well.    That would be something.   He's been working out with the Delmarva team and holding his own, it sounds like.

    • No, as it appears to be a group think decision, where all have some input.  In the end it really doesn't matter if it's all Elias, Sigbot or Hyde or some combination of the 3, Hyde is the one who defends it to the media/fans, and he's the one who gets paid to take the critism/blame.  Either way, starting Slater is the move that WHOEVER make the decisions appears to love, so that's what I expect to see, even if it doesn't make sense based on this years performances.
    • I’m guessing he may be bulk reliever later in game. Have to see.
    • You think Hyde alone makes the decision?
    • Gil has been terrible in his last 2 starts, he has  given up 10 earned runs in 11 innings
    • It's a meaningless game so hard to read anything into it. It could also be more of an "opener" gambit so that Davidson can be brought in with favorable matchups. For a team that believes so strongly in matchups, I don't know why we don't use the opener more often, especially when it has been effective against us.
    • Both are deserving. That’s not the point. How they construct the pen in ‘25 may be different. None of the guys you mentioned have been pen guys, although McDermott probably should be. Young and Rogers are more of a starter repertoire. Armbruster and others, like Tony said in another thread, should be pen arms. You need flexible and effective arms to move up and down, while they gain experience. We need some guys with some swing and miss stuff. Adding Bautista back into the back end moves everyone down a notch, but some of the guys we have now will likely have to move on for the purposes of flexibility. There is always some natural turnover, and for good reason.
    • And?  If they were buying his career stats, then they were fooled by a bait and switch.  Yeah, career numbers are good, but they don't reflect the reality of this year.  .541 OPS against LHP.  Elias/Hyde has a tendency to bring in guys who might have had good career numbers, but who are not playing at that level in the current year, but then letting them play like they are performing at career levels.  Slaters numbers this year don't reflect that he should be getting starts versus LHP over Cowser, even with the struggles Cowser has had.  That said, I fully expect to see Slater starting as that's the move Hyde will love, and will then speak eloquently at how great Slater is hitting against LHP this year, even though that's clearly a lie.
