Are we attempting to sign Brian to a longer contract so that teams interested in trading for him will know that they aren't trading him for a 1 year rental?

No, they are trying to extend him to keep him here.

Looks like determining if Roberts can be signed will be this week's focus and we are now seeing more specifics. Rosenthal generally breaks a lot of stories and he has now written twice about this in the past week. Rosenthal says 4years gets it done.

Schmuck speculates 4 years at $45m is what it may take. Seems like too much...would prefer 3 x $36m.

Rosenthal also said the Orioles have their "ears open" to teams that may have an interest in Roberts. I still think the Dodgers will make a strong offer along with the White Sox and possibly the Cubs. Would anyone trade Roberts for James Loney 1B of the Dodgers? His power numbers would improve at OP and he is currently making $411,000 and will turn 25 in May..

Any idea if it would be a 4 year extension, or would they tear up his current deal. If they would tear up his current deal, it's still 3 years and as we have all seen before, the dollars usually never make sense.

Roberts for Loney? I would.

Anybody have Hudson's number handy? The price differential between BRob's 2009 salary and Loney's would likely make BRob/Hudson a wash next season and Loney basically free.

Until Hudson signs elsewhere (and nobody seems to be knocking down his door at the moment), I don't see the need for LA to give up anything remotely as valuable as Loney to address 2B. I'm beginning to agree with the notion that it's in the Orioles best interest in this market to extend Roberts rather than trade him.

But if the Dodgers made such an offer? Where do I sign?

Hudson is a nice player but he doesn't have Roberts speed and Roberts is a doubles machine who steals third a lot which gives him the abiity to score a lot of runs. Roberts averages 85 to 100 runs scored a year where Hudson is a 55-70 run guy. Roberts steals 35-50 bases a year and Hudson 5-10. They are both the same age. Roberts is also a good PR guy for any team and he is very likeable. Roberts is a B+ player and Hudson is a C+. Why would we want to trade him? Age and money! I am okay with him staying with us and I am okay trading him. I cannot see him getting $11 million a year. Hudson will be lucky to get $6 or $7 million a year. Brian should be in the $8 - $9 million a year range but he has already turned down $10 million. He must be dreaming about the Cubs or Dodgers. I think something will happen soon with his contract status. Having him under contract will increase our trade opportunities whether it's now or in July.

I guess implicit in BRob's demand is that he isn't interested in an option for a fourth year. Also implicit, I would think, is that there is no way he will rip up this year's deal as part of his demand.

That's actually a pretty big issue for both sides to bridge. 3 vs. 4 years for BRob will be an interesting negotiation. I would bet the amount per year is about right at 11.

You mean... "I disagree 100%". Not everyone is onboard giving Roberts a 4 year extension.

Not that it really matters, but Cindy was correct in using "we"...really, either I or we is correct. She quoted SG, so she was replying directly to him, so the use of the word "we" means that she and SG disagree.
