At least there's a path for the Orioles to make the playoffs. The 1980 Orioles had the second best record in MLB with 100 wins. Unfortunately for them the Yankees won 103 games and the O's were on vacation in October instead of playing baseball.

I remember those years--very unfair.

Looking at the Orioles Franchise record at Baseball-Reference.com, some surprises right around then for top position player every even year:

1976: Belanger (not Reggie Jackson, Bobby Grich, Lee May, or Kenny Singleton)

1978: DeCinces (not Eddie, Singleton, or May)

1980: Bumbry (not Eddie or Singleton)

1982: Roenicke (not Eddie, Cal, Singleton, or Lowenstein and his 176 OPS+)

Rule proposal: If the 4th wild card team has a better record than a division winner, the two teams play one game to see who makes the playoffs.

I do think since the 3rd best division record has to play the WC round they should let the top WC team move to 3rd.

Both teams would get home field anyway but by doing this you avoid a potential divisional rematch in the DS round.
