Roch: Cowser to join Orioles in NY

I am good with this move but caution people that Cowser seems to take awhile to adjust at most levels.  I remember when Westburg was going to be the spark.  Honestly, he hasn’t looked any different than Ortiz   Again, I am all for trying, but I guess not quite the optimist that many others here are.

Now they win every single game, right?

If you read the OH message boards you would think so.

That's all I kept seeing every day. Cowser, Cowser, Cowser!!  I thought this thread would have a whole lot more celebrations from this news based on the posts for the past month or 2.  Even @Brooks The Great would take a totally unrelated topic and some how turn it into a Colton Cowser thread.

Well, here ya go. You guys got your wish! Now let's see how much the expectations change. I get the feeling some will be tempered, but I'll be happy to be wrong and see Colton Cowser turns into the next Mike Trout. It certainly would be better than what we've seen happen to Kyle Stowers. (Is he even active right now?)

Congrats Colton Cowser. Looking forward to seeing you play!

That being said... The O's can call up every exciting position player they want. Unfortunately the system doesn't have any pitchers who will make a difference. It's awesome to contemplate a lineup that has Adley, Gunnar, Westburg, and Cowser. But the real moves that Elias needs to make are trades for a starter and two (at least) relievers.

Stowers just started his rehab assignment with Aberdeen

Thanks.

(Switching to Jagwar's train of thought...) With there being approximately 3 weeks to a month of baseball before the trade deadline happens, I am wondering if Elias is trying to get a sample of how our prospects look on the MLB level so he knows what to do between them and the guys in front of them. I consider these call ups more of a intelligence gathering move than I do of a desperation play. Depending on how well they do, it could make parting with a different player that another team is asking for, easier. That might be one of the ways we get pitching. But you never know what the conversations are behind closed doors.

Of course, I was wrong about the theory of why he was slow playing them, so I could be wrong about that too.

Not that an approx 30 AB sample really means anything, but Westburg has clearly outperformed Ortiz in his small sample, not to mention that he's gotten the semi-regular PT that Ortiz wasn't offered.

I've never seen anyone suggest that Cowser is going to be the next Trout, or that he's a one-man savior for the team (not even Trout has been able to save the Angels over the years). It's about getting your best talent an opportunity to play when they're ready, and Cowser and Westburg are better talents than Hicks/O'Hearn/Frazier/Mateo. It's as much about setting the club up for 2024 and beyond as whatever relative improvements they bring this year.

There isn't any single pitcher that's going to save the team either.

I hear the part on Cowser. I hope that fans are able to hold REALISTIC expectations for him.

But you have to admit, a good pitcher or 2 would really help. If we could replace Irvin or Gibson's start with a starting pitcher that is actually good/effective that would help seriously. And then if we could get just one good middle reliever that would be a big boost as well IMO.

He's looked way better than Ortiz, especially at the plate.

I think you're using hyperbole a little bit too much.  No one here has ever expected Cowser to be something like Mike Trout.

I don't think it's unreasonable to see someone slashing .330/.459/.537 at AAA over 257 plate appearances and wondering WTF is taking so long that he hasn't been called up.  Especially when there are guys like McKenna on the team.

IMO, this move is, like, two weeks too late.

I think everyone's been admitting this all over the place for years now.  This isn't new.  You could practically drop this sentence in anywhere in the history of the OH and it'd be true.  I can't think of one point in the past 20 years where we could look at an entire pitching staff and be like "Nah, we're good, don't need two more arms."

I hope that Elias pulls a trade or two to get some bullpen help here, IMO that's the biggest point of concern.  I don't think our rotation is all that great but I'd really like to see him get two more bullpen arms because I think being able to bridge to Coulombe, Baker, Cano and Bautista is a huge obstacle right now.

But this is a Cowser thread.

Maybe something isn't right with Mullins?  He has not looked good at all since he was rushed back.  That play yesterday where a runner from first scored on a grounder to center can't happen.  Was Mullins being tentative or just lackadaisical?  He isn't the type of player that helps you if he is at 80% because so much of his game is based on his speed and athleticism.

Hyperbole is unnecessary in this instance. Cowser just has to be Cowser. Baseball of all sports has proven time and again that 1 guy doesn't necessarily make the difference. It's about putting the best team together... just ask Trout and Ohtanhi.
