Why would he sign a deal like that? It destroys a large majority of the value. The opportunity loss over 10 YEARS when he isn't getting paid will come to to easily 300m if not more. This is like one of those fake NFL deals with all the money on the back end the player will never see, so overall number is worthless. This overall number is similarly worthless since he has to wait a freaking decade to start collecting lol. I'd love to hear the rationale from the players perspective. Or any perspective explaining how this makes sense. I'm sure agent loves it because he is getting paid on 700m vs the 400m it is really worth. Probably like now.

It’s an extremely lucrative pension, downplays any greed perspective, and enables the team to fill the roster for World Series runs. As other posters have mentioned, he likely makes tons of money through endorsements.

I feel like these massive deferrals are going to be addressed next time there's negotiations around the cap. You really shouldn't be able to get away with paying Ohtani $70 million while only having $46 of it count against your cap

The MLBPA likes them.  You think the owners are going to try and make it a point of contetion?

Why?  MLB has determined that $70 mm ten years from now is worth $46 mm today.  So they pay tax based on the present value.  Seems fine to me.  They’re paying the tax long before the salary is due.

I guess my real issue is that they're paying him $2 million a year now so they can afford more talent while they have him. Seems to be skirting the spirit of the cap if not the letter.

Very few players are going to agree to really large deferrals.

I'm sure more process reporting will come with something this much of a break from tradition, and some of it I'll be curious to hear whether Tony Clark or the MLBPA were briefed on what is initially being called "Shohei's idea".

It isn't hard to imagine the MLBPA not being entirely comfortable with such a high deferral so "the team can win".     Clubs perhaps won't limit pursuing this savings angle to when all anyone sees is the SEVEN HUNDRED MILLION topline.       Granted with Scherzer there's precedent for a gigantic contract going ~50%.
