How old was each player at the time? Is playing at Mississippi State in the SEC more preparation for a player than one who came out of High School? I sort of feel like Mayo is more impressive.

How old is each now?

Mayo is 22 and Westburg is either 25 or about to be.

By the way, you ragged on me for days when I drew conclusions from the first 4 lineups.  Now, after 6 games Tony makes many of the exact conclusions (re: Holliday, Westburg, and Kjerstad).  Just curious.   Are you going to rag on him for doing exactly the same thing after 6 games?

He conceded that Mayo is probably the better player.  I think he's just saying that Westburg is no slouch.

I saw that, I just found it curious that he made a direct comparison to wRC+ on two players in very different age groups and backgrounds.

No. Because he kept sending me messages about trolling.

Because it’s a question of the roster right now and not who will be a better player long term. And the two players are currently separated by age and experience.

You don't know who the better player is right now, let alone long term. You may have decided it in your head, but that doesn't make it a truth.

I don’t have it decided in my head. I brought up in another thread Mayo breaking camp with the team, Westburg playing 2B and Holliday getting more AAA reps.

Reasonable.

My instinct the last 6+ months has doubts about Jackson making the opening day roster this season. Yet I keep hearing and reading the opposite.

cannot recall an Orioles team that has ever had this much positional depth. One spot for Norby, Stowers, Kerjstad, Cowser? All ready for MLB chances…This is going to be the most interesting spring training!

I don't feel that bad about Norby and Stowers being passed over.  I hope they find spots on other teams.  I'm afraid guys like Kjerstad, Cowser and Mayo are going to be stuck in AAA by our depth.

Neither Cowser nor Kjerstad would be a big favorite to contend for Rookie of the Year.  Obviously it could happen, but neither one figures to get 500+ at bats even if they’re on the roster on Day 1.   Especially if they’re BOTH on the roster.  So ROY is pretty far fetched in their cases.

In that case, do you know what their super two dates are?
re: ROY, there are several candidates with legitimate chances, but I think that if these guys show up and play well, they will continue to play even if the original projections don’t anticipate full season of at bats.

You've been here longer than me. You should know that's how it works around here. Someone will make a comment on Tuesday and crickets. One of the big guns will make the same comment on Thursday and it wil get upvoted into oblivion.

Besides, we already knew 1 & 2 were coming. Elias told us they were. 4 is not surprising given he played over all of the young guys last year.

We could have  kept Peyton Burdick and optioned him. Interesting that they didn't but the fact that Burdick made the DFA rounds suggests to me that losing McKenna is no big deal.

Funny, because I would say waiving other CF AAAA depth would mean that there is no reason to keep another backup CF around because McKenna is that guy. I also think Daniel Johnson must look good enough in camp to get rid of Burdick/Hilliard. It’s also interesting that we’ve only lost 4 players off waivers this offseason. Two of those were CF options. I don’t think the world of McKenna, but he’s a good bench option as being RH to a LH Mullins.
