Re the “carry over from last year” argument, I was thinking today about Luke Scott in 2009-10.   In 2009, Scott had a .957 OPS at the all star break, but slumped horribly after that and posted a .667 the rest of that season.  Then he had a horrible first 5 weeks in 2010, and as of May 4, had a .604 OPS.  We were hearing all the exact same arguments about how Scott’s bad start was tied to his poor finish in 2009 and spelled long term doom.  Zap - Scott then posted a .964 OPS for the rest of the season.

I'm not saying this will happen with Hays, but it’s an example of why I don’t buy the “carry over” argument.

Counter: Hays really wasn’t that good in the 1st half last year either. He produced, but was aided by a .389 BABIP in the 1st half, that returned to something closer to his career average (.303) in the second half (.288).

Not to say this is who he is now, but I’d say he’s a slightly below average hitter overall who is useful as a platoon partner on this team. The talk about sending him down is silly, but I think Hyde now rightly sees he’s not an every day player given our other options.

He’s certainly not an everyday player if Cowser is going to outhit him.   I just want to see Hays get his rate stats up in his normal range, and if Cowser continues to outhit that, God bless him.

Seems like there's a chance he goes on IL today with a calf strain, though he has avoided the IL in recent years when similarly banged up.

Pretty curious who they would bring up. Kjerstad is most deserving but not really a good 1:1 for Hays' RH bat + defense combo. McKenna is an option. Burdick. Norby maybe.

I’ve said before …the low OBP guys will be weeded out as the better players come up. Hays was never going to be long term.

I think this is part of what is going on.  Hays in my opinion is pushing a bit because he wants to stay and keep playing.  In the off season he announced he would love to sign an extension.

He ia a player I have always liked and admired.  He was a bright light on some dark teams without much talent.  He played all out when there wasn't much to play for except pride.

However, the tide is rising and it would appear guys like Hays will be replaced.  Whether he continues as a 4th OF guy or not IDK.  I hope he comes out of it and plays his best.  But I still expect Cowser to get the most abs.

Based on Hyde's comments and tone in the post game presser, it kind of sounded like an IL decision could be coming today. I doubt they want to go into this series short a player if he is going to be unavailable today and possibly Wednesday.

I wonder if they flew a RH bat out west to be ready.

Hyde's tone was definitely "it doesn't look good but I'm trying to not say that right now".

Even worse.

Why wouldn’t they ship a real player out there?

Gotta be another move coming tomorrow, right? Odd they wouldn’t be more prepared and got Stowers or Kjerstad out there today.

Bringing Banuelos up. Prob was on taxi squad. Gotta make a real move tomorrow, don’t you? Burdick or McKenna come on down!

It isn't Burdick, he just got DFA'd to bring up Banuelos. Too bad the Tides are off tonight, so we can't use their lineup as evidence of who is coming up. Clearly we need someone on the ground at the Norfolk International Airport!
