The 2024 Trade Deadline

If only Isaac Paredes could play CF

Pete Fairbanks might be a worthwhile trade target, but his SO9 went from 13.5 to 9.8 this season. That's a bit of an alarming dropoff if Fairbanks doesn't start striking out more batters.

His average fastball velocity is 97.1 MPH compared to 98.9 in 2023. Still throws hard, but the strikeouts are down.

They also won’t care about dealing in the division. Not that any team should.

Ellis said recently that Tampa was not going to trade Glasnow inside the division  last winter.    I don't know that would change for their current  players.

I like Crochet a lot and have no problem trading big prospects for him. He is going to help you for next 4 years. The team will have to have a plan for him this season. I could see him going to bullpen after ASB. Other option would be shutting him down, then bullpen , then build back up for postseason.

Yes, I would say that Crochet is the only pitcher I see available that I could see Elias trading Basallo for.  Unfortunately, I believe Crochet is only controlled for 2 1/2 more years.  He missed time with Tommy John surgery but that was MLB credited time.

I'd guess where there is smoke there is fire. I assume it would be for an excellent player who is under control for a couple of years. We've already given up one generational talent in Ortiz, according to Bryse Wilson, so why not ship another out if it helps the team win now and over the next couple of seasons?

There’s no smoke here

For Sam Basallo the Rays would most certainly trade within the division, but there's zero chance of that happening. There's no player the Rays would trade that's worth that price to Elias.

I doubt Tampa is going to have a fire sale, they are getting a bunch of good pitching back by next season and will be in a pretty good spot to be competitive.

Yeah for them it's more about unloading salary; I can see them deal Eflin and maybe try to dump Yandy Diaz.

They're not in first place.

I really think they have their eyes on Basallo as not only an huge impact player for the team, but also as the face of the new Latin program for many years moving forward.  As in using him as a recruitment tool, a shining example of what signing with the Os can mean, etc. Latin America was an early stated goal and I think ME sees it as the absolute key to longer term success. And I think he sees Basallo as the face of that end of the operation for the next 15 years or more.

Wouldn’t surprise me at all if Basallo was the first player meaningfully extended.

Tampa is getting a bunch of pitchers back from the IL next year.   I wouldn't act like Tampa is a team that will be down long especially with a front office that has proven themselves for many years.

That wasn't what you asked. You asked, "what's changed"? They're not very good right at the moment, and I believe they will move players in a trade if it makes sense. In the division or elsewhere. I don't think they'll hang up a clearance sign, but they'll be dealing.
