The 2024 Trade Deadline

All this post says is, who cares about the quality or cost, just get an arm because we are desperate.

Taillon wouldn’t be a good get. Hes an if all else fails type guy in the offseason

I think this is exactly the opposite. We know exactly what the cost would be ($$ and in this case the prospect), and this is a pitcher with a track record (quality). He's a better game 3 start than we have right now, even if it's not quite the upside of what else is out there. Or rumored to be anyway. He may not be my hands down target for this trade deadline, but if you ask me who I'd rather have, Mac Horvath/Bright or 2 1/2 years of Jameson Taillon I'm taking Jameson Taillon.

Sure, absolutely. I am not attached to either of those prospects and Taillon is solid. I'd hope for some cash as well.

We could ask for some of their help with cash in exchange for higher prospects or lower ones if we pay the full price, depending how deal is made

The rumor includes cash just not a disclosed amount.

Not saying there is no chance they are dealing Bassitt but all indications are they are committed to trying to win next year.

I agree that’s a hurdle, but in theory Bassitt is more replaceable than trading Vlad or Bichette, though. They could trade Bassitt and that opens up his $21M salary next year to sign a new free agent pitcher of about the same caliber (maybe even Kikuchi?), and they pocket the prospects they get in return for the half season they aren’t competitive.

Jays could be an interesting fit for Urias, they’re planning on being competitive next year and their 3B/2B group is pretty weak.

Bassitt at 1/21 for 2025 is probably a better deal than Toronto could get on the market if they run it one last time.

I noticed 2nd half we have all 7 of our games with them in a short burst near the trade deadline.

Manoah and Tiedemann both having disappointing seasons, so they need innings if they care about competing.

Kikuchi had a terrible game yesterday winding down the first half.

It'd take a multi-year commitment though.    I think somewhere between Kyle Gibson and Chris Bassitt is that tipping point Elias cares about.

Cole Irvin might be a fit filling out behind Berrios/Gausman if they go as far as Bassitt but not as far as everyone.

German Marquez made his return from early 2023 Tommy John the other day, but looking at his exact 2025 contract terms, he has a LOT of escalators.    It looks like if he hits them all he earns about 1/20 in 2025 similar to Chris Bassitt.

Clubs will probably gain a view of 2-3 more starts before deadline deciding time, but he probably offers greater upside than Cal Quantrill among Rockies pitchers.    Zoom in the microscope on that small sample.

2 years/$20M (2024-25)

signed extension with Colorado 9/8/23

24:$10M, 25:$10M

2025 roster bonuses: $2M each for 30, 60 days on active roster

2025 performance bonuses: $2M each for 140, 150, 160 innings

assignment bonus: $1M with trade, to be paid by acquiring club

I agree. They can add via FA.

I think Stowers makes sense for them.

Would you do this deal?

The Cubs wouldn't. Why would they give Taillon away for a package led by a guy who wouldn't be in their top 20 prospects and eat half his contract for the right to do so? I'm not claiming Taillon should net a 50FV guy, but this makes no sense. His contract is reasonable for what he is, a low end 3 high end 4. They have no need to salary dump him because they have a lot of money coming off the books for 2025, which could be almost 70M if Bellinger opts out. They're planning to be competitive in 2025 so why dump him just so you then have to bring back in a new guy who is likely more expensive? If they're eating literally half his contract, they'll get a far more substantial return than this.

He would be, so the Jays are going to have to view any deal in very favorable terms. They have the leverage with him.

    • We know his plate discipline is poor.  Beyond that, earlier in the season, I thought he was just coming in too steep.  As in, he's late and/or his arms get too far behind his body so his hands then go directly to the ball.  He's still hitting the ball hard but the launch angle isn't there to create HRs.  What I think now is that he's letting the ball travel too far because he's focusing too much on right field.  His Pull% is below 2020-21 (though it is = 2022-23).  His Cent% is below his career average (47% vs. 55%) and his Oppo% has climbed every year (19%, 24%, 26% and now 32%).  In other words, the stupid eyesore wall is probably part of the overall power shortage, which seems to come from bad luck (many top-of-wall doubles) and an increased approach to right center.  We have seen him use right field when he's going well but maybe that approach has become excessive.  There have been many times where he's hit an inside pitch, off the plate even, to the right side.  It's also true he'd have 20 HRs playing for many other teams, so we wouldn't be having this conversation.  I always coached my kids to work away, but when I had a kid letting the ball travel too far, or who wouldn't even pull an inside pitch, I'd try to reset them a bit by having them focus on hitting the ball in front of them more.  We don't know what the O's and Mounty are teaching and working on but I'd love to see him try pulling some inner half pitches for a few games.
    • If you look closer than just ERA, he's been terrible.
    • He was excellent earlier in the year when his velocity was a few ticks higher, but it’s dropped as well as his command. I was OK with the Kimbrel acquisition. I was not ok with it being the only real reliever acquired outside of Elias’s typical waiver diving approach.
    • I think the issue with Brandon Young is he's both unproven and has not operated as a reliever much at all this year. He's apparently made, what, 3 appearances as a reliever with 33 PA (which would be more like a middle/long reliever). Personally, I'd like Young as an option in September when rosters expand, and I'd like Rogers optioned as Povich given the rotation spot. Young is intriguing, though. But there's a world in which you can have Young *and* Neris.
    • This was a bet by Elias that really blew up in his face. To pay this much money for this kind of performance.
    • Pretty funny that Jorge Lopez has made Hector Neris expendable, whereas if the O's just picked up Jorge Lopez *FOR FREE*, we aren't having this conversation. You have to ask yourself the following: Is Hector Neris better than any of the following: Seranthony Dominguez - no Craig Kimbrel - maybe Yennier Cano - no Cionel Perez - maybe Colin Selby - yes Burch Smith - no (situationally) Gregory Soto - yes Keegan Akin - no I don't think there's a world in which Elias admits that Kimbrel is cooked and cuts him. Just not going to happen. So he's off the table. That leaves Perez with 2 years left of control, so don't think he's going anywhere. Gregory Soto who was just acquired by drastically overpaying for him and his extra year of service and his inability to get righties out with all of his control issues, but I don't think Elias admits defeat with Soto since he just overpaid for him *and* talked about his extra year of service. So he's not going anywhere, unfortunately. So this really leaves Colin Selby. Selby has options, something Elias loves. Neris doesn't have options.  Rosters expand soon, but you can only have 14 pitchers. So that's 1 extra arm. I could see a world where they option Selby, pickup Neris and then when rosters expand bring up Young and Selby and do funny things with the rotation to keep guys fresh. To me I like Hector Neris more than a couple guys in the bullpen right now. The WHIP sucks, similar to Soto, he also stinks against righties, similar to Soto. But if we look at his last, let's call 20 game sample, Neris has only allowed earned runs in 5 of them. 2 of the 5 have been more than 1 run.  So, maybe you don't anoint him the closer, but he's definitely better than some of the guys in the pen. Why not? Elias already missed on one bullpen arm that cost nothing, and instead we are calling up Selby and giving time to Kimbrel, Soto and putting guys like Perez in sticky situations more often than not.
    • The bullpen has had a worse performance in the second half than in the first half, in both 2023 and 2024. So it would be interesting to see the rankings for the second-half only (the one that is likely to be reproduced in the playoffs). In part, this was due to injuries. But this is part of the game, all teams have it. If other teams are doing better, it's because they have more depth or a plan B.
