How far do you go to try to save this?

Trading their #1 starter certainly wouldn’t increase the odds.   I suppose if you were a Cardinal fan you’d be telling them to sell, right?

Trading for Gray is probably not in the cards (stumbled upon a pun there).  He's not a FA after the season like Flaherty was last season, the Cards are not the type of org to give in when they have a shot at the postseason, and I'm not sure Gray would be happy back in the AL East.  But if they do make him available I think the O's should at least be in on him.

So it was suggested they trade their Ace that they signed this offseason only to sign another Ace next offseason? Yeah, if I'm a pitcher and just saw that happen to Gray I'm not touching a contract with the Cardinals.

Most players will sign with whoever gives them the most $$$. Now if the Cards did that to Gray, there may be a little "tax" on it next go around in the offseason. But the Sonny Gray level contract is not org altering money. It's what a 75 million dollar deal with a club option?

There is a list of prospects I won't give up for anything but a multi year controlled player.  And probably not more than 1 of those.

There is a list of players I will give up for the rental.

Despite some people thinking prospects are being held down, there is no prospect back log.  OHearn, McCann, and Santander aren't coming back next year.  They could move on from one or both of Mateo and Urias.

O'Hearn has a friendly team option for next year and currently one of our most productive hitters, I think he is certainly coming back next year.  Depending on who is traded at the deadline I can see and kind of hope Santander comes back as well. I agree McCann will not return.

I don't believe that Elias is completely responsible, plenty of teams have tanked and just not hit on picks. I think they want to encourage teams to be competitive.

Yeah , they definitely don’t like teams practicing tanking , especially continuously

I don't disagree that you can draft lower and still get/develop good talent.

My point was that with drafting that low, you cannot rely on the consistent same level of top tier talent like Henderson, Rutschman, Holliday (successively). For one that was an aberration as it had never been done before.

We are going to have to use ALL the means available for talent acquisition OR the ceiling will be the Rays/Brewers/Guardians - good but never great/good enough.

I think we’re on the same page on that subject

    • Can you imagine that same lineup but with Mayo, instead of Urias, at 3rd?  🙂
    • Good summary. This would be my guess as well. Won't stop people from repeating proposals that make no sense and then getting mad when they don't happen.
    • Toronto up 8-1, hate rooting for the Jays. They blew a 5 run lead last night and got destroyed. No matter the results, the Yankees pitching has regressed badly.
    • Your logic totally eludes me.    He was excellent last year.  He has been excellent in May and June this year.   He’s not the same pitcher he was in 2022 and before with the Orioles.

    • What date is that? I feel they both may.
    • Good heavens, why didn’t you understand that? When he was with us before he was terrible.you can see his walk rate was never good with us. I was overjoyed when we traded him to the Marlins, and except for last year,  he was a headache with them too.  So I am concerned, and with reason, that if we buy him back, he will again be bad with us, so no thanks.
