Bowden on some Os related deadline thoughts

No matter what his stats are now, his last year proves he is high risk and therefore can't be trusted. His price will also be a lot higher. We have the assets to get someone who is more dependable.

That's a fair assessment.  I wouldn't be willing to give up a whole lot for him but I'd at least inquire rather than just dismissing the possibility out of hand based on what he did last year (which is not what you were doing).

I don’t understand why Basallo is untouchable. Don’t we have Adley. Trade Basallo for a #2 if possible asap.

Huh?  Teams carry two catchers, both can DH, both can play 1B, Adley has not been extended, and so forth.  The Orioles can easily and happily roster both of them.

Its the years of control with the #2 thats the problem. We have 6 years of Basallo. Elias clearly puts alot of value in that, as he should.

Also, the Adley years are three after this season. Unlikely Basallo starts with the team next year so at most he's part of two years of AR. They can split Catching duties which should keep both bats fresh.

I get it. But we are trying to win a World Series this year right now.

We do not have to trade Basallo to fill our needs. People need to stop acting like we do. Kjerstad would be a lot of team’s #1 prospect.

I honestly don’t care who we trade, but trade(s) need to happen.

For the same reason Mayo is, or should be? Because they are special, middle of the order bats.

You should care.

I want to win a World Series after being a bottom feeder my whole life. They have a legitimate shot to do that. You gotta take a shot now

I refer you back to my first comment. There is zero reason or need to trade anyone above Kjerstad.

So you win one, then go back to being a bottom feeder after draining the system of talent and your home grown ML guys price out of Baltimore.

IMO, there's really no one available at the moment who's worth moving Basallo, Mayo or Holliday for. Kjerstad would be tough to let go, but based on his position, years of control and  "defensive prowess," I'd be fine seeing him go for a solid SP. His bat is legit though.

Draining the system might be a little exaggerated. ;)

Yet, I feel the same way about the years of control aspect.  You have to give some to get some, but I don't see them doing that with with Pitching... especially rentals.  Kjerstad is an interesting thought, but I think I'd be as surprised by them trading one from our active ML roster as a top prospect.  I think that article at the beginning is likely correct that we want to trade from the middle of our farm.

I would be shocked if we aren't active in FA for a maybe a #1 SP and possibly 2 #2's, something like that.  I feel like it's more likely we do something akin to what we did last year with Fuji and Flaherty.

My preference is to be good for 10 years.  The best teams rarely wins.  Let’s be consistent like the Ravens in 2007-2012 and win one.  Or the Braves.  Make a move for a great reliever, sure, but that shouldn’t cost the elite talent.

We could be the Astros who have won 2 WS appeared in another. And been to what FIVE consecutive ALCS?

With the extreme approach that we took to amass this kind of talent, I would rather set the bar high. We didn’t need to undergo the misery of extreme tanking just to have a team that could qualify for the playoffs each year. The Brewers and Guardians have that and they didn’t employ the extreme tank tactics. What we did forced MLB to change the rules to prevent it from being done again.

    • So give Burnes $30-35 and you still have $23 plus whatever pay increase is approved
    • 1) I feel like we could’ve used some veteran star power leadership  2) Money 💰…if need be get a switch hitter  3) I’m standing by sign Burnes …I anticipate 6 or 7 years … Fail or Fall? I expect him to disappoint … In addition to Burnes I’d be looking to extend Eflin  4) I think we have a number of guys leaving … we almost certainly have a pick for Santander and Burnes if Elias fails. Spend some dam money  5) I think they’d approve $200 ish million …. But who know. I’ve come to believe his name should be bargain bin Mike. But I’m willing to wait and see since the new owners may push him to bulk up the team. If I’m Rubbenstein I’d want some star power to have a shot at a WS while I he’s still alert  6) I’m done with the batting coaches … bring in one competent guy. Preach get on base and make good contact over swinging for the moon.    In regards to pitching it’s the rash of arm injuries that has me concerned. Was it a fluke or coaching philosophy. I’ll chalk it up to bad luck but boy we had a lot of it  7) I think Gunnar is the guy you go after… if it’s a no …you can early extend Westburg. I’d want to see Adley rebound. If the front office is confident he will maybe you extend him now.    8.) I’m fine with McCann but perhaps we need a C3 with the way we regularly play both. 9) I’m fine with what we have if everyone is healthy this coming year and Felix is ready to roll from the get go. I believe he makes Cionel, Cano, Dominquez , Coulombe and Soto better. If you want an upgrade then I guess you can trade some as depth   10)I think he likes to take shots on lottery tickets… I don’t think it’s out of the box for him. Holliday depends if your moving Mullins along.
    • Just listened to it for the um first time. Not sure how anyone could um listen to that um entire uh press conference, um three uh times.
    • Thanks for detailing these out.
    • I was mistaking him for someone else…
    • This years playoff lose does not reach the top 5 in terms of pain for me. 1.   When the Jet beat the Coltsin the 69 Superbowl.  Now that is pain. 2.  Mets beat the heavily favored O's in the 69 WS 3.  Pirates beat the O's in 71.   Family my ass. 4.  Jeffery Maier robs the O's in the 96 Championship game vs the Yankees 5. Cleveland's Tony Fernandez  homers off Benitez  in the 11th to beat the O's 1-0 in the 97 Champion Series. Love the O's.  This years lose was not has bad as any of those.
