7/4 vs Seattle Mariners

Kevin Brown just said "the Mariners have still not been swept."

He somehow managed to avoid the temptation to say "the Mariners are sweepless in Seattle".

That's like watching a dog sit there with a big juicy steak in front of him and not make a move for it.

It’s on Elias, too. But Akin is a guy you put in when you’re up by 4 or down by 4. You don’t put him in any leverage situations especially not with runners on. There is simply nothing that shows he’s effective in these situations and the splits aren’t even there. He’s actually worse against lefties. Just leave Baker in if you’re going to bring in Akin.

Hyde’s pitching usage really is head scratching at times. But Akin is a good pitcher. Baker is much more unreliable, but we don’t really have a reliable guy. I have become inured to Hyde’s moves, but that doesn’t make them smart.

But so what? “sometimes you suck,” as Adam said.

Yes, we need more relief pitching, and yes, as you said that is on Mike, who seems perfectly willing to let all his prospects grow old and die in AAA unless he gets exactly the deal he wants.

But we have time.

Akin isn’t a good pitcher. He’s just there. Career WAR of 0 after today (0.1 prior). He has a career ERA+ of 85. We keep getting bamboozled by short stretches of dominance only for him to look utterly inept the other half.

Career

Runners on: 295 BA, 844 OPS

Nobody on: 231, 672

This year?

259, 849 OPS with runners on. 150 with nobody on, 460 OPS.

Hyde may be a beggar since he can’t choose, but he really should avoid Akin at all costs with runners on. The data shows he’s worse against left handed hitters, too. He hasn’t been good against them since 2022.
