Really terrible news.  Add me to the list of people hoping for his return before the postseason.

I believe he can make it back prior to the regular season as long as it was a clean break that doesn’t require surgery and hopefully then have enough time to shake off some rust and get back to MLB game speed.

Was in a terrible car wreck a few months ago when I was hit by a garbage truck. Hand in splint for a week followed by a cast for 3 weeks. Was told it would take additional 4 weeks for full movement but within the first week post cast coming off, it was completely healed.

That sounds terrible and pretty scary. Glad to hear you had a quick recovery.

Makes no sense. Soto is a lefty. He’s not playing against a RHP over Gunnar/Holliday and probably not against a LHP either. Literally just seems like an injury replacement.

If you are looking for a RH shortstop in this organization you'll be looking for a long time.

https://www.fangraphs.com/roster-resource/depth-charts/orioles

AAA - Soto, Maton, and Servideo all LH

AA - Burns and Bencosme, both LH

A+ - Vasquez is LH and Young is a SH (not sure about his splits)

A- - Arias is a SH (again, splits?) but we do have Maikol Hernandez and Adam Crampton (injured) who are RH

Rookie - Sanchez is LH, Amparo, Peguero, and Guevara are all SH (!)... but everyone's favorite 18-year-old, Luis Almeyda, is a RH

Whew. That's crazy right there. Elias is alergic to right handed SS's.

Well, he did just draft one in O'Ferrall. :)

And wouldn’t be surprised if at least two were drafted in 2025 with potential 4 first round/comp picks (Os, competitive balance, QO Burnes, QO Santander).

Did anyone notice the splint contraption on Westys hand while in the dugout yesterday?  I saw it briefly during a replay and it was LARGE.  Roch even commented on the splint in his blog “The plastic cast that Westburg wears runs up to his elbow and isolates his thumb.”

This off-season will provide great insight into how much Rubenstein is invested in this club.  I am still hopeful he will do his best to keep at least one of Burnes and Tony Taters.  Show us you are ready to play with the big boys Rubenstein.

I do feel like Westburg and Mayo are on a bit of a seesaw.    If the healing outlook is very favorable once Mayo is around 40ish active roster days, who knows the play.

Mayo this fall might be a little short of the club's best 9 everyday bats if Westburg can rejoin the group.

The competitive balance pick the Orioles get next year will be after the 2nd round. The may get another supplemental first if Cowser wins ROY.

    • It is generally good for business some of the former Orioles are playing well. Sean Casey was talking about Norby this morning and remembering being stuck behind Thome in Cleveland and glad to get to Cincinnati. If SIGBOT thought Norby would be first string ever on its depth chart, I believe it would have treated him differently.    Obviously the Westburg injury timing was atrocious, making today seem worse. We'll see if Norby outplays any of Westburg/Gunnar/Holliday next year, or the seasons to come.   Big picture I'm glad the guy is getting a shot.     I'd mentioned Mayo establishment as an opportunity cost of hoarding players, and I suppose that idea fits for Norby too.
    • My current confusion is that I thought Mayo would be in that first category, but it has been the second. I guess it shows what they think of his defense, which I get, but… the Mountcastle and Urias injuries should have been enough to bump Mayo to everyday status. Instead we are giving Eloy all this time, even though Mayo seems like a higher upside play.
    • I seem to recall Eloy being in there against quite a few righties of late  He also has reverse splits over his career, so using him as a strict platoon guy against LHP makes little sense.  May be reading too much into the L/R thing when we are fielding everyday lineups with Rivera, Jimenez, and Slater.  We just need better players.  Kjerstad has shown the ability to hit both lefties and righties in the minors.
    • Yep. In the offseason, I said they had to trade one of Mateo or Urias and 2 of Hays, Mountcastle, Santander, OHearn, Mullins or Santander.    If you do that, are you really any worse off right now?  Maybe if Santander was traded but it depends on what you got back and how the replacements filled in for him. The slugging and power is great but average at best defense and a 308 OBP isn’t tough to replace. This team holding onto so many mediocre vet guys all in the name of “depth” just doesn’t sit well with me. I think it has hurt the team.    You can always acquire depth. Depth is in abundance. Talent is not. You don’t forgo talent for depth.
    • Completely fair. I just think some people were hyped up about Adley’s power surge the first few months even though there were some issues under the hood. Not to this extent, but there were some problems.
    • This is going to be even more of a concern for 2025 in my opinion.   There's really not a lot to pull from in the minors, most likely losing Santander and Burnes plus some.   Kjerstad is a question mark because he's never been given an opportunity to get a months worth of AB's because of usage and injuries.   I'm just doom and gloom right now because the last couple of months have been really disappointing. It's going to take some decent money this off season to address some of the needs, and I'm hoping ownership will be willing. I'm also hoping Mr Elias will be willing to rely on outside talent that's a bit better than the stop gaps that we've seen so far.
    • This correct. https://trace.tennessee.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1426&context=jasm There are other factors, of course, certainly school has started and that has an impact. But I reckon the Orioles just puttering along isn't helping things. It'd be different if they were performing like they were to start the season. But the team currently looks like the 2015 Orioles (a .500 team) than the 2023 Orioles (or first half 2024 Orioles, for that matter).
