When are we going to find a real closer?

I love Sherrill and all' date=' especially as a lefty specialist, but he just doesn't have the closer stuff.. I guess were stuck with him there for now. He'd be so much more valuable if he could be used like he was in Seattle..[/quote']

I didn't want to be the one to say what you just said because I would be called "negative" but I don't want Sherrill as a closer at all. He is a good specialist and I wouldn't trade him right now, because he would be great to have as a weapon in our contending years, but he always gives up at least a hit and in some cases a run.

We don't have a Papelbon (ugh, I hate that dude so much) and we will need one for the future years when we will be facing the MFY and the Sux in the ALCS and wild card.

Sherrill is too "soft" as a pitcher. The batters can always see him coming, but some can't adjust to the use of the lefty change-up. But the ones who can adjust usually kill the ball. We need a hard throwing guy who has some trick pitches but can hit 96-97 if he has to.

We are better off talking about this when things are going well rather than do it in a month when we are all lining up on the nearest bridge to take a leap. Sherrill is awful. I have never liked him. Maybe as a situational guy in the pen but he's a terrible closer. It's just a matter of time before he comes back to bite us.

I think in Seattle he proved he is valuable out of the pen. He is just not a closer, nuff said. He got me worried when he threw those consecutive curve balls to Andruw Jones.. I was actually happy when he walked him, because he was just sitting on the fastball.

I don't think he's a great closer but we have some solid above-average relievers in the bullpen right now even though maybe none of them is a lights-out kinda guy. I'm happy with that. While Mariano Rivera (I know, I know) is my favorite player of all time and watching him come in in the ninth gives me chills, if I'm going to add a star to my team, relief pitching is about the last priority on my list.

I'd rather have Sherrill than Ray...and if it wasn't for that Kinsler double tonight (which he could have hit off of anybody), I don't know that this discussion would even take place.

I've never really liked Sherrill as a closer. He just makes me nervous.. His stuff is not overwhelming. But hey if he keeps getting the job done, I'll be happy. He's just another stopgap until we find a real closer..

We will get a "real" closer when Chris Ray is fully recovered from Tommy John surgery....

It takes a long time to come back from that, and when he does, we won't be worried about who our closer is.

I hope you're right. If he can mix up his pitches effectively. He does throw straight gas when he's 100%

It's supposed to take a full two years to recover from that surgery. Yeah I know there are a handful of examples where players came back quicker, and I assume it won't take him that long, but give the man some time. Chris Ray has that "closer mentality" and he knows what hes doing. When his arm is back to where it needs to be, we will all be happy.

Why dont we wait till he starts blowing saves before we run him out of town:rolleyes:

This. I don't understand the hatred toward Flat Breezy. Though he gives the most steadfast and hearty of us heart problems, he gets the job done. We could be stuck with that lunatic, BS idea of a closer by committee, so let's be glad of who we have, warts and all.
