I don’t get the defeatist attitude myself. This is a new organization than the past.

The play down the stretch was hard to watch. That said it’s a quality franchise now.

Logically you are 100% correct.  But 9 straight playoff losses does a thing to a fella.

BTW, in those 9 playoff losses, the Orioles have held a lead for a total of 5 innings.

This lineup is deeper than 14-16. Those 5 losses were from all or nothing type teams.

Yes…. People can make the same claims about this team but they are better. Until they show it people will criticize and question which is fine. The one game they hit last year they didn’t pitch. The narrative won’t change until it changes.

I think a lot of people are feeling the pinch of inflation. I got my truck registration last week and it nearly doubled. I am going to today’s game but I thought l long and hard about it. The weather and work/school schedules I’m sure were factors too.
As far as the team goes…sure it’s frustrating to see a team as talented as this floundering but in the grand scheme of things it’s just a game and not life or death so I’m going just hoping for a competitive game that turns out in our favor.

I feel like this lineup compares to 2016 in the sense that it's a home run or nothing. Otherwise, yes it's a different organization and we have a chance to be a playoff team for the better part of a decade.

That team was              2024

7th RS                           2nd

9 BA                              3

5 K’s                             8

2 SLG                          1

101 OPS+                    118

Imagine that team playing in this park now? I know how bad they looked yesterday. Not denying that.

Wow! I guess it just seems that way.

That was pretty embarrassing.

Empty seats everywhere.

LF upper deck almost empty.

For a GD playoff game.

:puke:

I don't mean this as any kind of personal slight toward you. Please do not take this as such.

But people/fans showed how they felt about this team who has been a loser for almost 4 months. And largely continued to hedge (beyond the Eflin addition) at the deadline.

I bet you who did not have a bunch of empty seats for their playoff game yesterday .... San Diego. IMO it is because of the effort that they put in to continue to engage the fanbase.

You can't sell people on the "homegrown" stars idea and no need to add a lot of outside talent. And then some of those "homegrown stars" who were so hyped flop. And then not extend the ones who turn into stars. That communicates a lack of investment by the org.

Now when you add that up in the economy/2024 inflation and combine that with all of the other entertainment choices that people have in 2024; things like this will happen.

Empty seats during a playoff game = an unengaged/unexcited fan base. The org has to own much of this.

All of you guys talking about empty seats and an unengaged fanbase - did you not see the post showing over 41K in attendance, more than in MIL or HOU?  Are those fan bases also unengaged or disinterested?

This is much ado about absolutely nothing.

IMO, this mindset ("new chapter") is part of the problem. We can't act like the past and the terrible relationship that the org had with it's customer base does not matter or have a carryover effect.

Whether the org calls itself "new" or not IMO is irrelevant. The issue is whether or not it will operate in enough meaningful different ways.

If the org wants more of it's market to be engaged it is going to have to raise the bar to championship expectations and invest more in the on-field product. That would be different from the past and would indeed reflect that something is "new".

The on field product has the talent to win and bring out fans now.  I’m not saying not to spend more money.

Your first paragraph I agree with. The new owner assumes all the “debts” leftover. Ultimately it’s their responsibility to repair it.

They screwed up big time with their pricing. If this team rebounds and gets in the DS the excitement will pick up. Only the last week did they have any momentum after months of losing it.

If the org believes your first sentence is true, why isn't a single player signed to a meaningful contract? Beyond Eflin's mid-tier 1 yr SP contract commitment for next season, where is the investment in the on field product at?

Gunnar isn’t going anywhere for at least 4 more years after this. I’m all for signing him longterm. Whether Gunnar is signed or not has nothing to do with how they played down the stretch. If he had a 10 year deal that doesn’t make him or anyone else better.

From a fan standpoint clearly inking a home grown star to a longterm deal will go a long ways. I am hopeful new ownership will do these things.

I live in South Carolina so it's not a convenient drive, but I did buy ALCS tickets right away last year (obviously that didn't pan out) but didn't purchase any tickets (yet) this year. I could see myself making the drive up if they happened to win the next two for a ALDS or ALCS game. But with how the team has performed the last half of the year I can honestly say I was significantly less excited this year than last.

Of course, I did watch every pitch and followed all the reports and media leading up to the game so I'm still invested, but it's certainly a bit different.

    • And McCann is our worst RHB facing a dominant lefty with reverse splits. You have to think a K is a high likelihood.  And then to send him up there with Ramon on 3rd, you have to expect the same outcome.
    • I don't like hearing that a catcher has a back issue -no matter how big or how small it is- at age 26.
    • IMO he made two decisions that were clearly wrong, pitching to Witt and not PR Holliday, to go along with a couple others I didn’t agree with but are certainly debatable. There is no doubt that the game was lost because the bats couldn’t push a run across, but everyone has a job to do, and like the batters, Hyde didn’t do his.
    • I use the StatCast search function. It’s a little more complicated for chase rate, ground ball rate, popup rate, and sweet spot rate because you need to adjust selected pitch attributes/outcomes as well as total pitch definition and then use % of pitches. I believe popups are categorized by stringers and generally capture balls that an infielder could catch.  I believe Adley’s fly balls have gotten can of cornier even without the popups.
    • ...or simply choose not to even attempt to play situational baseball.  As I posted in another thread, 0-0 game both teams aces are dealing.  Ced leads off the inning with a double.  Your #9 hitter (McCann) is coming to the plate with your two best hitters (Gunnar and Westburg) to follow. Instead of bunting Ced to 3rd and almost assuring yourself a 1-0 lead which firmly puts the pressure on KC, Hyde chooses to let McCann swing away.  He feebly strikes out, Gunnar grounds out (there was your run), and Westburg flies out.  0 runs, 1 hit, 0 errors. 1 left on....
    • Adley - Is it an injury? Is it a woman? Is it the "process?" Is it just who he is at his age? What Is It? And no, I'm not doing a pole. Wait till 2025 for the answer - I think. Till then - speculate. This off season goin be fun on here. This thread kinda makes me miss Rick Dempsey and I have absolutely no idea why. 😄 Oh yea, he was our last WSMVP.
    • Hasn't he had a girlfriend for a long time? And she's just now a distraction?
