Wieters

The value of this compensation pick will certainly be hurt if several of these teams don't sign their own first rounders. As I understand it, teams get a comensation pick one spot lower than the draft pick that they used to draft the player that they did not sign.

This will impact directly the draft pick the Orioles will have as a result of the 2007 season. I see it like this if all current unsigned players don't sign. Parentheses for current 2007 standings which are subject to change...

1st - 2007 worst record (Devil Rays)

2nd - D-Rays Comp pick for David Price

3rd - Royals Comp pick for Mike Moustakas

4th - Cubs Comp pick for Josh Vitters

5th - 2007 2nd worst record (Pirates)

6th - O's Comp pick for Matt Wieters

7th - 2007 3rd worst record (Reds)

8th - 2007 4th worst record (Giants)

9th - Rockies Comp pick for Casey Weathers

10th - D-Backs Comp pick for Jarrod Parker

11th - Giants Comp pick for Madison Bumgardner

12th - Mariners Comp pick for Phillip Aumont

13th - Marlins Comp pick for Matt Dominguez

14th - 2007 5th worst record (Rangers)

15th - 2007 6th worst record (Royals)

16th - 2007 7th worst record (Nationals)

17th - 2007 8th worst record (O's or White Sox)

18th - Rangers Comp pick for Blake Beaven

19th - Cardinals Comp pick for Peter Kozma

20th - Phillies Comp pick for Joe Savery

21st - 2007 9th worst record (O's or White Sox)

This is all very subject to change based on who signs and and how the season finishes out but the O's top ten pick for next year could be lower than the 20th pick.

Thanks for this post, rep points coming your way. I was wondering what the draft next year might look like if all the unsigned players remained that way. That's going to be such a mess. So, conceivably, we'll fail to sign our #5 pick this year, get as low as #6 next year, and then wont pick again until the 21st pick. Two first round picks isn't bad, but this system just seems screwy. August 15th seems awful early to be the deadline for signing players. It seems like it puts more power in the hands of the draftee instead of the club that drafted him.

I said it before I will say it again:

Weiters has yet to sign an agent.

He is a junior and has another year of eligibility left.

He will most likely be the #1 or #2 pick next year.

Someone said he wouldn't want to spend his 20's playing for Tampa Bay. Well do the math....make millions more and live in Florida or make millions less and sign this year. Your 21 years old, what would you do?

This front office is as inept as they come. They have slowly taken what was once a proud franchise and turned it into the laughing stock of the majors. Why? Well one, their fans are loyal to a fault. For years and years they didn't have to make excuses why things didn't get done, their fans did it for them. Now, with the MASN contract they are making money even if 8,000 people show up to watch the game. Angelos and crew are masters at lip service but terrible at execution.

I would not be surprised in the least if this deal didn't get done. And for those that said the deal is done they were just asked to keep it a secret so it didn't affect others negotiations.....well Detroit just blew that theory out of the water.

Well, that settles it then. :rolleyes:

I wouldn't even risk a dollar betting that the Orioles get it done.

But, there is no guarantee that Tampa would draft him or be able to sign him.

If that is the kids "secret plan"- to somehow get drafted by Tampa- then we didn't scout his "sanity" very well.

That theory is total BS, imo.

He was drafted 5th in the first round. If he is angling to go higher- then that is a silly risk, too. He can drop a heck of a lot farther than he can rise in next years draft.

Thanks for bringing this up.

This August 15th deadline is a joke.

If they moved the deadline up six months instead of two months, that should suffice.

Instead, they had to rush everything, which is silly.

MLB - the egg is on your face if this many first rounders aren't signed.

It doesn't matter what the deadline is - it was/is always going to be a crapshoot right up until the deadline whether or not slot busters sign.

Actually, one inside source has said...And he hasn't been accurate in the past.

Bigbird doesn't seem to think it will happen.

I thought it was Peace that said the deal was done? Wasn't he the one who called the exact date that Perlozzo would be fired? Seems pretty accurate to me.

Drew and Angels draftee Jared Weaver are the only 2004 picks unsigned. Both are represented by Scott Boras, who did not immediately return a phone call Wednesday.

See... this is his MO.

This is what Drew eventually got...

Stephen Drew ss

5 years/$5.5M (2005-09)

* signed major-league contract 5/05

* $4M signing bonus paid over 4 years

* $2M in "easily attainable" bonuses, for total possible value of $7.5M

* 05-06: average annual salaries of $0.3M, 07:$1.5M

* drafted 2004 (1-15)

* agent: Scott Boras

* ML service: 0.079

That's a good point, and he called that a good month or so before it happened.

Still, it's strange that one source says "it's done" while another source seems to think it probably wont happen.

Looking at Porcello's contract, looks like the Orioles have to offer more than you said.

Only if they panic, I still contend if they hold firm at the amounts I suggest there is no way he goes back to school and kills a year of development time. Especially when it's a crapshoot that he'll get more than that next year.

True, but then again I thought Bigbird just said that his source hadn't heard anything about the Weiters signing.

CentralPA wasn't saying that as gospel, it was just a point that someone brought up. Nobody seriously believes that he WANTS to play for someone else. He just wants to get paid, I don't think he cares by whom.

And while Wieters could definitely wind up looking stupid if he holds out for next year, he could also very easily be the #1 pick simply by going back to school and playing as he already has. With a talent like Wieters, the impetus is on the club to sign him, not on the player to become a professional ASAP. At the end of the day, talent will prevail; all these kids have options if they don't get the money they want.

I'm not paying too much attention to this issue until tomorrow at midnight. If Wieters isn't signed by then, then I'll ***** and moan about it. Until then, none of these articles mean anything to me, just a lot of posturing and speculation.
