Wieters

If the squabble is over a MLB or minor league deal then that would be even dumber than squabbling over money.

This franchise is completely snakebitten. I will have 0 confidence in Andy MacPhail if he f**** this up.

Snakebitten to me implies that they are simply unlucky. While that has been true in cases, this organization has been its own worst enemy enough times that I wouldn't say the Orioles are in their current state due to bad luck, despite what Angelos says.

On the other hand, take Orioles fans........now there's a snakebitten bunch. :D

We shouldn't panic... We should learn from the past and relax... The same kind of artcile could have been written about Stephen Drew and Jered Weaver the day of the deadline to sign a couple of years ago. This is going to get done.

I hope you are right....I think it is about 70/30 it gets done right now...Problem is, when he was drafted, i had no doubt it would get done.

Wow ... just wow.

People here have been entirely too confident that the FO was going to get this done. They wait until a little over a week before the deadline to start talking to our No. 1 pick and somehow that's ok because they believe "it wouldn't have made a difference" and they "didn't want to bid against themselves".

"We're still talking back and forth," MacPhail told FOXSports.com on Monday. "I really don't know how it's going to go."

That says it all right there IMO. A little over 48 hours left and (from the sound of it) this deal is far from getting done and they may not even be willing to give him a 40-man roster spot. Why? Because Rob Bell, Kurt Birkins, Cory Doyne, Sendy Rleal, Gustavo Molina, Brandon Fahey, Luis Hernandez, Eidar Torres, Val Majewski, Tike Redman and Adam Stern are all too valuable to let go?? There's absolutely no excuse for this.

You knew who Wieters agent was from the beginning.

You knew there was a good chance it would take a ML deal to sign Wieters.

You knew it would probably/definitely take over-slot money to get Wieters and Arrieta signed.

Just no excuse. They threw away 2nd and 3rd rd. picks for middle relievers and now they may not be willing to pay up for our two best picks out of this draft.

This team never ceases to amaze me.

I have to say, i forgot about this....Yea, with no second or third rounder, it is extremely important to get your 1st and 5th rounders signed.

I'm not sure what we expect McPhail to say.

I mean, should he express that we MUST get Wieters signed (thereby reducing our leverage)?

Should he say that we'll get the deal done? (Thereby looking foolish if talks break off?)

What exactly do we expect a GM to say when dealing with a Boras client? It's like we KNOW the reality, but would somehow prefer that reality be distorted so that we feel better.

I would like to hear him say that they are confident that the deal will get done or that they are working towards an agreement or that negotiations are going very well.

Something like that.

I'd prefer that, of course. But it wouldn't seem all that much more valuable to me, and I wouldn't feel that much more optimistic. Having re-read the Rosenthal article, even that doesn't make me feel better/worse than I probably would at this point regardless.

I'm not expecting any major revelations from the man, but I'm sure as hell expecting better than, "Ummmm ... yeah, I really have no idea."

How can he have any idea? It depends on Wieter's true demands, which Boras isn't going to tip off before the deadline. For example, if Boras demands $10 million now, Wieter's might sign for as low as $4 million. But he isn't going to come out and say that, he's going to try to milk the O's for all they will give.

I can't wait to hear what the final offer was - it most assuredly better include what we would have spent on 2nd & 3rd round picks if we had had them.

    • I do feel Norby and Stowers alone could bring us a good reliever
    • They have no value at moment, but Hays might be on the verge of a heater, and Santander is a guy that could get hot for two weeks and be back over .800 OPS
    • Thought this might be the year we actually see Elias take a college arm in the 1st round
    • I think the club already knows if it is going to pitch him Wednesday or Friday next week, and the handling may tilt a little based on that.    I'd imagine some of that they are looking at Suarez, Povich or whoever the 6th starter would be against the Red Sox or Rays. Tyler Wells happening to be sturdy enough to throw a baseball again moments after John Means breaks down definitely doesn't seem suspicious, I suppose if he progresses well he could also sponge some innings in June.
    • So what happens if there’s a pop up right above second base with a runner on second? Can the runner stay on the bag, or does the runner have to move off of second base and risk getting doubled up anyway just to avoid an interference call?    Nevermind, I found it. However, a runner is not obligated to vacate a base he is legally permitted to occupy to allow a defender the space to field a batted or thrown ball in the proximity of said base.   I feel like there should be an addition to that that says the runner is allowed to return to the base without it being interference. Was Vaughn supposed to wait until after Henderson caught it before trying to return to the base? He would have just been doubled up anyway.
    • Not when he’s been working as a RP and throwing 95 MPH, but if he doesn’t find that fastball velo again then I would agree. I had thought 2021 Wells was gone, but he came back as a RP at the end of last year and was throwing 94/95 again. He will always be an extreme fly ball pitcher, but he’s had much better bat-missing stuff out of the pen.
    • I get where you are coming from and love the potential talents of our top four prospects as well. The problem that I see with this approach is that we may be forfeiting a potential promising chance for this season in order to maybe have a better one some years down the line. The issue with this is that the clock is ticking on Adley and Gunnar while we continue to hedge/hold. Also, something worth considering is that Basallo/Mayo/Kjerstad are likely going to be vying to fill the same spots - 1B/DH/maybe RF? Plus Kjerstad will no longer be a prospect next year (given his age) so it's kind of now or never in terms of extracting value from him vying trade. Next season Kjerstad will be 26, Stowers 27, and Norby 25. AND Adley will be (aged 26) in year 4 and Gunnar and Westburg in year 3.
