Who's your 2008 SS

The Angels have Roderiguez, a pretty good looking young SS, plus any number of pitching prospects. Wood figures more to be a 1B/3B. What about the Cubs, Cedeno and Pie/Murton for Miggy? or the Mariners, Betancourt and Balentien?

Cedeno + Murton sounds good.

Cedeno + Pie sounds bad.

Cedeno + Pie sounds bad.

And now from the O's perspective:

Cedeno + Pie sounds good

Cedeno + Murton sounds Bad

Cedeno is a talented guy, but he comes with some Question marks. Murton is just OK. Pie is the centerpiece.

I think Miggy lands with the Angels. They have the need (3B), the money, and are close enough to a WS to make the deal. If Miggy was on the FA market this winter he would would be one of the mose sought out players.

If you were LAA, would you spend 13M + prospects for Miggi, or 30M for Arod?

Sean Rodriguez is poor defensively at SS....He doesn't fit our need.

Murton and Cedeno for Tejada is a joke.

Cedeno only hits real well in the PCL....And Murton still must not be doing much for them to want Craig Monroe.

Dave thinks Murton has the same value he had last year.

If you want three players in return for Tejada, you're getting guys from the Murton, Cedeno bin. Sorry but that's the reality of the situation. Tejada's stock is down, and that contract has morphed from a plus to a minus.

If you want just one guy, then someone in Pie's class is doable.

Now if the Cubs were devoid of talent at SS, and had multiple CF candidates, then Pie himself for Tejada straight up would be feasible. But that's not the case, in fact it's the exact opposite -- the Cubs have several shortstop options, but only one legit CF (Pie).

Folks need to consider the totality of circumstances, instead of blindly throwing out conclusions like "Cedeno + Pie is fair". It may arguably be fair in talent, but it would screw over the Cubs in several ways.

13M + prospect(s). Only a two year commitment.

Production wise, is their alot of risk in committing to Arod? They've got several big contracts ending in 08 and 09.

All I'm saying is that if Arod opts out, we have some competition as far as trading Miggi to LAA.

Yeah, that pretty much sums it up.

Miggy is owed 30M after this year, I'd take AROD for 25-30M over Miggy, much much better production than Miggy, plus we know he can play a good 3B, plus he's probably still better at SS if they get rid of OCab.

Yeah, that pretty much sums it up.

No it doesn't...His value is climbing back up and no doubt Tejada would get the same contract(in terms of money per year) this offseason(and probably more) than he has now.

His value is more right now than it was before the injury.

It's higher than it was before the injury, but it still is well below what it used to be. Now if he keeps hitting for power the rest of the year, his value should be decent, but still far from what it once was. I doubt he's get more than 15M a year unless he finishes quite strong. His contract isn't appealing when adding the prospects that would be lost in a trade.

Right.

A team used to be able to justify giving up real talent for Tejada on the grounds that he is an underpaid superstar the likes of which you could never get for the same $$$ on the FA market.

Now, Tejada is neither underpaid, nor a superstar. You can argue that his contract is still reasonable, and in line with what he'd get if he was a FA, but it is no longer a selling point.

How about Matsui? He's having a decent year in Colorado.

"1 year/$1.5M (2007) - contract includes clause requiring club to sign Matsui to an extension by sometime in 2007, or release him (effectively granting him free agency after 3 years of ML service)"

Edit: I see he's been playing 2B exclusively in 2007.
