No it wasn't. The only thing he could have done with that pitch was bounce it to an infielder. Taking that pitch was the right move

The Rays´announcers said that because he was missing the strike zone by such a large margin on a lot of his previous pitches this inning, he (the pitcher) didn´t get the benefit of the doubt, even though that pitch was actually a strike.
