LaRussa to announce retirement

I can see Dave Duncan and Francona getting interviews.

Duncan is unquestionably one of the best pitching coaches in the game. Having served under LaRussa for so long is a positive, hopefully something wore-off. Lack of managerial experience may hurt him though. It may be in the Cardinals best interest to retain him as pitching coach under a new manager.

I'm not sure how to read Francona. Remember, this guy was underwhelming as manager of the Phillies. Was Boston successful because of his managing or because of the shrewd GM-ing of Epstein? If the reports about the frat-like atmosphere in the Boston clubhouse are true, Francona looks weak for not shaping things up.

As I wrote in the other thread:

"La Russa's Cardinals teams finished above .500 in 12 of his 15 seasons, including the 2004 and 2005 seasons in which the team recorded 105 and 100 wins, respectively, making La Russa just the second Cardinals manager to oversee two 100-win campaigns. His Cardinals teams finished no lower than third place in all but three seasons and they held first place or were within a game of first place during September in nine of the past 11 seasons. Prior to 2007's 78-84 finish, the Cardinals were the lone National League team to have posted a winning record in every season since 2000. In 33 years of managing in the major league he put up a 2728 -2365, .536 winning PCT with 6 Pennants and 3 World Series Titles."

He's a clear HoF manager.

He is going to have to wean himself from the pain killers before his next job.

Before this thread spirals off topic, I just want to say this is the perfect ending to a Hall of Fame career. If you could script it as a kid, this is how you'd want to go out.

No doubt. I wonder if LaRussa would have retired if the Cards hadn't won the World Series. He's certainly been at it long enough, but I have to think that going out on top after being so far out of the picture in August was very appealing to him. This was about as good as it could ever get.

O

3 Golds and 3 Silvers for La Russa. :)

More importantly, he made Mike Francesca look like an idiot. In 2005, Francesca said that La Russa "burned his teams out in the regular season, and they had nothing left for the playoffs."

    • Up 550,000.  I’d hardly call that awful.  You can’t lose 100+ games three times in four years and have a pandemic in the other and expect to recoup all your attendance from the last time you were a playoff team in two years.
    • We have gone over this repeatedly. Hicks' salary through 2025 is locked in based on his contract with the Yankees. Unless someone wants to pay him more than the 9.5M per year his Yankee contract will pay, he will simply sign for the minimum and the remainder of the 9.5M per year will be paid by the Yankees.
    • I mean I do agree with the many people who say here that if Cowser or Kjerstad or some other hitter emerges as good or better than Santander, then yes of course it makes sense to trade him.   But I just don't trust prospect rankings.  Don't assume a player will be as good as high as he ranked until he proves it over a period of time.  In 2016 Jorge Mateo was the Yankees top prospect, just ahead of Aaron Judge -- just to name one example.  For this reason I think Santander hangs around a little awhile -- unless the O's trade for or sign a replacement outfield bat prior to the season -- in addition to trading Santander.
    • But the Rays did lock up some of their best hitters -- mainly Evan Longoria and Wander Franco.  I know Santander is not at that level, but I think there's a good chance Santander is with the team to start next season.  I think it's a mistake to assume someone is ready to take over for him until he proves it.  If not then trade for or sign someone who is -- if he must be traded now or pretty soon.  I don't trust prospect rankings.  In 2016 Jorge Mateo was the Yankees top prospect, just ahead of Aaron Judge.   Also, the Orioles don't really have the pitching in the minors the way the Rays always seem to.  Can't imagine Means or any decent pitcher getting traded for that reason.  And for a long time the Rays weren't a very good hitting team, which I think is a big reason the Rays never tried to lock up their position players until guys like Evan Longoria started to emerge, though there may be a bit more to it than that.
    • 49ers QB Brock Purdy had UCL repair with InternalBrace. Here’a a summary comparing the two. I’m sure Bautista and his medical team will closely consider the best course for his circumstance.    https://www.armoredheat.com/armored-heat-blog/tommy-john-vs-ucl-repair
