Decisions, decisions....

Okay, you didn't answer the question about McCarthy so you could what? get into another argument about the OP? Look, if they don't get Buck any reinforcements, no harm no foul. K? However, in your scenario of offseason FA help does Buck have any standard he's held to for winning?
From what I've read McCarthy's injury isn't major, or career threatening. But I used McCarthy as an example of the kind of FA SP we could pick up in the fall. It could just as well be A. Sanchez, Edwin Jackson, or Colby Lewis. If they picked up one of those guys and added a bat like Napoli and a stop gap 3B like Izturis, I would expect Buck to improve the W/L recored by 5 W or more over this season. If he didn't, I still wouldn't fire him, unless he had lost the clubhouse, or the W/L record had regressed to well under .500.

Tampa clearly can't spend a lot of money. What if we offered Joe Maddon 50% more than he gets in TB? Would he leave?

Buck gets $1.5M per year. Maddon gets 2 per year. What if we offered Maddon 3-4M per year? Would he be better than Buck? Enough to justify it?

The thing is, it just doesn't make that much sense. The team is already playing over its heads, even as it's losing. What will a better manager bring to the table, exactly? I'm fine with Buck, and think he's done a decent job overall, even if his decisions sometimes baffle or infuriate me.

What will a better mgr bring to the table? Somebody who makes better decisions thereby not infuriating or baffling you.

Seriously, they have played over their heads, but I believe with some of his decisions Buck has cost us at least three games that I can think of just with mismanagement of the starting pitching and bullpen. I don't deny he has instilled the team with a sense of pride and urgency that was lacking before he arrived, but he infuriates me with some of his decisions, too.

Managers, ALL of them, make moves we don't understand, wouldn't do. We aren't part of the day to day inter workings of the team.

#WhiteSox announce acquisition of LHP Francisco Liriano from #Twins for #IF Eduardo Escobar and LHP Pedro Hernandez.

So did the twins get a deal or a bag of balls?

Pretty sure a bag of balls. I'm disappointed Duquette didn't put together a comparable package.

Your last sentence has been said by someone about literally every manager in the history of baseball. Every fan of every team disagrees with some of their manager's decisions. That's the nature of being a manager. What makes Buck's mistakes any more egregious than any other manager's?

I've said it before and I'll say it again-- all managers are pretty much the same when it comes to in-game decisions. There's no one manager who is dramatically better or worse than others. 95% of a manager's job is what goes on behind the scenes-- managing personalities, garnering respect of his players, etc. Showalter, IMO, is one of the best at that. Quibbling about his in-game decisions is meaningless. We could do the same with any manager.

Doesn't look like they got a top 10 prospect out of this. I think I read Escobar was #14. Looks like they got Hernandez from the Padres, and he's had a pretty successful MiL career, might be some upside there, and I'm not sure where he would have ranked. Escobar was rated as the best defensive infielder in the system, but looks like he never really hit much at the MiL level.

    • A Kremer cherrypick - since his 6.19.2022 return to pitching decently for the Orioles - just 30 MLB SP have achieved Qualified Status over that now 1.75 season haul. Gibson and Kremer are 18th/19th in innings entering today (when both covered 7 good ones). One has a 7.29 K/9, 2.61 BB/9 and 1.26 HR/9; the other has a 7.51 K/9, 2.64 BB/9, and 1.21 HR/9. They are some of the weakest workhorses at per-batter effectiveness, but that workhorse capacity is their notable trait. https://www.fangraphs.com/leaders/major-league?pos=all&stats=pit&lg=all&qual=y&type=8&season=2024&month=1000&season1=2024&ind=0&startdate=2022-06-12&enddate=2024-11-01&team=0&sortcol=7&sortdir=default&pagenum=1 After today, since his 2014 first full year, Gibson lags Greinke by 40 innings and Cole by 60 innings for 2nd place behind Scherzer.    He's never been a pitcher a playoff team wanted to throw.
    • Fantasy Baseball Poisoning is a pervasive and tragically understudied public health concern.
    • Yeah, I guess you could say Kjerstad is the contemporary version of Terry Crowley for this team.
    • I can’t even control myself from checking the game cast prior to seeing what happens on tv, which is usually running at about a 30 second delay.
    • It's not that I'm not disciplined...phone alerts, wife, friends, etc make it harder than necessary if I can't watch a game and don't want to know the score.
    • I'll differ a little bit...yeah, great start tonight from the perspective that he got through 7 innings of 2 run ball.  That's fantastic. But only 7 swinging strikes and 4 strikeouts against 4 walks.  He got some DP grounders but the Yankees were making loud contact in the early innings before he settled in a bit.   That's the thing that kind of confounds me about Kremer, he'll have a game where he'll strike out 7-9 batters and you'll see real swing and miss stuff and then the next start it'll be hardly any swings and misses, not as many strikeouts. Maybe that's why he's anywhere from a 3rd to 5th starter.  Tonight was a great outcome but I don't think he looked his best.
    • If you are disciplined, you can avoid learning the result and just watch the game unfold without knowing what will happen, and skip all the commercials.
