Cal Ripken: "Beltre the best third baseman he's ever seen. Sorry Brooksie."

Vin never saw Brooks play other than the '66 World Series. Besides, screw Vin Scully. Retire already.

As someone who has listened to Vin Scully for 28 years and counting I can say with confidence that this is the single most ignorant post I have ever seen on the Orioles Hangout and that is no small feat. Congratulation, this is like climbing Everest, K2 and surfing Mavericks all in the same day.

From what I understand, Cal was pretty bad tonight. Not just because he said that, but overall. Which doesn't surprise me. He has a college degree inferiority complex. He tries to make up for it by trying to sound educated but just comes across as flat, boring and average.

Wow! GTFO with that dumb statement.

I'm sure Cal regrets saying what he did especially on a night like this, but lets not get carrried away with hating on Ripken.

Yep, even if it were true (which it's not even close to being) you don't say that. You just say Beltre is very good.

Really? I mean I'm not really arguing either way and I don't really agree with Cal here, but it's not like a ridiculously absurd comment. According to BREF, through 15 seasons Beltre has 22.1 dWAR. Through 15 seasons, Brooks had 25.5 dWAR.

It was not just this statement that really made me mad at Cal. He went out of his way to dis the Orioles as much as possible the whole game.

I was thinking TBS told him to be careful of homerism and he went overboard because he's not very good at the job.

Really? How? I mean now we're just making stuff up.

C'mon guys. The Baltimore Orioles just won their first playoff game IN 15 YEARS and this is what we're talking about...

I hope that was all. I felt a lot more betrayed than I did angry. Still, it would not bother me for him to never broadcast another game.

He tried too hard to be unbiased and said chit in the heat of the moment that he probably regrets.

It's not a ridiculous statement.

I'm 30 years old. I never saw Brooks play. Honestly, all Brooks is to me is a class act, a few awesome highlights from the WS vs the Reds, a bunch of records, and a generation or two of fans before my time that are here to tell me how amazing he was. Which is fine, I don't doubt any of it.

But Beltre is really damn good. I'm not here to say he's better than Brooks but I don't see how it's out of the realm of possibilities that someone could be.

EDIT: Actually, I just turned 31 a few weeks ago, I just don't feel like admitting it to myself. That, and I don't think I can think straight right now.

If Cal thinks Beltre is the best ever, that's fine. He's allowed to have an opinion.

That being said, he is not really good as a color guy, and seemed to go out of his way to praise the Rangers. Maybe he was just trying not to show too much bias to the O's.

We won the game and that's all that really matters. I apologize for my negative attitude in this thread. I was just a bit disappointed with Cal.

It just seem as though he never said anything positive about the team. He also apparently did not know about the 74-0 record when leading after 7.

Come on, we know where Cal's loyalty is. I agree with the above poster, I think he's such a professional he just doesn't want to show any bias.

    • My original goal was to see if anyone had more value than Gunner in his first 208 games as an Oriole at the start of his career. But the span finder in Stathead doesn't do WAR. Rettenmund hit better, but was worth 6.1 rWAR in his first 232 games. Blefary was an okay LFer, so no. Sheet was a essentially a DH. Rutschman may have done it. His pace has been 7.7 rWAR per 208. Cal was sort of close, but hurt by that start. Through 182 games he was sitting on 4.2. Eddie was held back by being a DH a lot in his first year or two. So I'm pretty confident that the two most valuable Orioles through their first ~1.5 seasons are Henderson and Rutschman.
    • As an aside, I was shocked how bad Bumbry’s second full year was when I looked it up following my guesses.  .898 as a rookie, then .592.   I also forgot that Jim Gentile had a couple of cups of coffee in other orgs before his rookie year in Baltimore, so he didn’t qualify for the list.
    • Last year at Bowie he was 109/288 (37.8%).   This year he’s at 21/64 (32.8%).   So, that’s progress.  He’s always going to strike out a lot.
    • You got Rutschman, he's 5th at .799. • Fine for 3 run save opportunities
    • No one saves 100%. Kimbrel will be fine overall.
    • I really hate the chicken little sky-is-falling posts after a tough loss. Reactive and dumb and obnoxious.    I haven’t looked yet but I’m assuming someone else will be here victory lapping.
