Matt Hobgood - is there hope? (No, there is not. Indy League bound.)

I know he is a great kid and all...but that draft still makes my blood boil. Tyler Matzek sure would have been nice. The best part of this story is Joe Jordan is no longer an employee of the Orioles organization. Good riddance.

Was Hobgood Joe Jordan's fault, or was he a signability pick imposed on Joe Jordan by people higher up in the organization? Either way, it was a terrible pick then and it's a terrible pick now.

The guy got injured. He has never been the same guy he was in high school. It happens.

From all I heard Jordan was behind the draft strategy that year.

The idea that he was a signability pick imposed from above doesn't make sense when you look at the 8.8 million the O's spent on the draft that year.

Higher ups don't force you to go signability in the first so you can spend a million each on Ohlman and Coffey.

Also, Mike Minor (#7) and Mike Leake (#8) signed for less, were picked after him, and would look amazingly better than this pick. And even Wheeler (#6), picked directly after, only got about $900K more.

I noticed at the time that it took a bit more to sign him then one would expect from a guy rumored to be going at #22.

I saw him when he pitched in his first game with Bluefield. He never touched 90. This was not the guy I had heard about. It went downhill from there. I think he was injured sometime between his last high school and first Oriole appearance.

It's funny to look back on this now. I remember people were saying things like "in Joe Jordan I/we trust" around here. Not needling you, it's just one of those things you can say with the benefit of hindsight. People are now saying the same stuff about DD but I have more faith in him then I had in Jordan. Hopefully things continue to go well for us.

You know, for the first few years I could at least console myself that the guy I would have picked has struggled.

Yeah. Got it. Lot of pressure on those high school kids to impress.
