Team believes that Wieters will forego long-term deal

Wieters refusing to sign here would be the best thing the Orioles could ask for. He's a .230 hitter this year with a .285 OBP and Buck refuses to move him down in the lineup, although he is the worst hitter on our roster. Also, it is not like this is just a down year for him, his offense has gotten worse each year since he came up. He just plainly put is a terrible hitter. He can take up 15-20 mil of someone else's budget, but it shouldn't be ours. We could sign much better catchers for less than half the cost most likely...

The bolded statement is just blatantly false. And you are also presenting a false choice between not signing Wieters to a long term deal, and signing him to a deal worth $15-20 mm a year. I do agree that Wieters has not proved he is worth a contract of that magnitude and that we'd be crazy to sign him for that kind of money right now. Our best course is just to go year by year with Wieters right now, but he is still an important component of a team that is winning, and would be difficult to replace. The fact that he is having an off year with the bat doesn't change that, and Dan and Buck don't make reactionary decisions. I'm confident they'll handle this correctly.

Matt needs to shorten his swing....take that big loop out of it. It's just plain stupid to say Matt could be replaced by a better catcher for half the price. Dumb.

I dont think anything can be done with Wieters. He is who he is now.

If I were the O's rep in this negotiation I would simply type this on a piece of paper and sit it in front of Boras:

Salary among MLB catchers: 10th

WAR among MLB catchers: 74th

.....so Scott you're here to discuss an extension for Matt. What are your terms?

Those numbers would be radically different if they were based on more than April-June 2013, as I'm sure Boras would quickly point out.

If you had a point of view with more validity you wouldn't have to embellish so wildly and ridiculously.

I wouldn't necessarily say that, but I wouldn't do any planning based on the assumption that he'll become more than he is now.

Exactly.

And what he is now is a 22 HR, 25 2B, .250 AVG, 75 RBI, .310 OBP guy who plays great defense behind the plate. That is probably where he will be give or take a little for his prime years, tailing off near the end of whatever FA contract he signs.

The question is how much do you want to pay, and how much will the market pay that type of guy.

I don't know where the critics are coming from, but Wieters' 0 for 4 tonight was deceptive. He got some good wood on the ball. I mean that one hit went all the way out to the warning track. Usually he can't hit it beyond the infield dirt, so I think he's starting to heat up. And that one play where the batter struck out and Wieters' tagged him with the glove on his behind. Most catchers do not think that quickly. I can't wait to see Wieters in the All-Star game. I don't know where this team would be without him.

Well the guy is wincing in pain after every single swing, so that's problem #1. He needs to be on the DL with a shoulder injury, but for some reason they're running a broken Matt Wieters out there. He can't follow through properly. That's probably a home run if he isn't injured as hell.

Wake up, Buck! Your All Star catcher is INJURED. And I never criticize Buck!

It's painfully obvious he is hurt, yet he goes out there every day and gives it his all. Give the man a break...

Clearly, he is hurting. He needs some time off since he's not really helping us now.

11 more games until the break. Maybe give Teagarden more starts and shut Wieters down the last 2 games to give him 6 days off in a row. Hopefully it's not more serious than that.

At first I thought this was gonna be an irritating thread, but when I opened it I got a good laugh. Wieters absolutely stinks at the plate right now - he REALLY does not deserve to be even considered for the All-Star game.

Good thread.

If he's hurt but playing through, great, thanks for your efforts. But why are you batting him behind Davis then? Eventually these pitchers will stop being stupid and pitch around Davis. Matt should batt no higher than 8th at this point.

When you think about it, what Davis is doing is much more impressive than what Miggy is doing. Miggy has Prince behind him, Davis has Matt.

    • So I looked up the rule book and I can't find anything that says this is the case. Maybe I'm missing it because the rules for unearned runs can be convuluted to say the least. "For purposes of calculating earned runs under Rule 9.16, the runner who begins an inning on second base pursuant to this rule shall be deemed to be a runner who has reached second base because of a fielding error, but no error shall be charged to the opposing team or to any player. For purposes of Rule 9.02, the Official Scorer shall keep records of the number of times each batter and runner is placed at second base in accordance with this rule." In the rulebook under unearned runs it states, "An earned run is a run for which a pitcher is held accountable. In determining earned runs, the Official Scorer shall reconstruct the inning without the errors (which exclude catcher’s interference) and passed balls, giving the benefit of the doubt always to the pitcher in determining which bases would have been reached by runners had there been errorless play. For the purpose of determining earned runs, an intentional base on balls, regardless of the circumstances, shall be construed in exactly the same manner as any other base on balls. (a)  The Official Scorer shall charge an earned run against a pitcher every time a runner reaches home base by the aid of safe hits, sacrifice bunts, a sacrifice fly, stolen bases, putouts, fielder’s choices, bases on balls, hit batters, balks or wild pitches (including a wild pitch on third strike that permits a batter to reach first base) before fielding chances have been offered to put out the offensive team. For the purpose of this rule, a defensive interference penalty shall be construed as a fielding chance. A wild pitch is solely the pitcher’s fault and shall contribute to an earned run just as a base on balls or a balk." I don't see where it states a batter that reaches on a fielder's choice due to a runner being being on due to error.
    • Joe Posnanski wrote a wonderful book, called “The Baseball 100,” his 100 greatest players. It’s full of wonderful quotes, but it leaves out a quote that is not just all of Baseball in three words, but that applies to all of life. ”Sometimes you suck.” Adam Jones. God bless Adam Jones. Yes, Hyde makes boneheaded decisions almost every game. Yes Mike should have done this or not done that, Yes Cowser shouldn’t have thrown that way, Ryan shouldn’t have missed the fly, yada yada. I was screaming as loud as anyone. My wife said,”I thought you liked baseball,” But now it’s tomorrow.  “Sometimes you suck.” Charge on.
    • Game 4 of Yankees series. It’s one game, but one game could be the difference in the division, having to play in the WC series, and home field advantage.  Things to consider…  How did games 1-3 go versus the NYY?  Should we ease Bradish back in a lower pressure spot so he’s not too amped up for his own good? Do we play matchups and go with a LH SP in OPACY? What happens in Irvin’s start today?
    • 9/9, 17, all Orioles.  I had 3 in common with Spy Fox's similar all Oriole grid.
    • Ugh…brown has negative hEAR
    • Since this thread has got more life than I thought it should, I'll add my two cents rather than just a quip. Last night pissed me off but then most losses do. I turned the game off when the A's tied the score in the top of the ninth. Figured that was the ball game. That it took another inning to lose surprised me. 16-9 in March/April with 4 to go and this much angst? Going to be a long year on OH. 😀 My approch is if the players making all that money can compartmentalize, darn it so can I. I sure have never had their physical talents so....  Got up this morning - sun shining - I'm still here - family is still here - play ball. IMHO, the only games worth really fretting over are family and health.
