A gain of 106,912 over last year, despite having one fewer home gate. Not spectacular, but decent I suppose. The closing homestand was very strong, as it should have been.

Probably an overestimate, for a couple of reasons. First, the game was on a weeknight, and the resulting twinight DH drew 28,290, some of whom probably used their rain checks from the night before. Others probably used their rain checks later and got counted in a later gate.

Looking at it another way, the 16th ranked season of the last 26.

1997	3,711,132	45,816	1st1998	3,684,650	45,490	1st1996	3,646,950	44,475	1st1993	3,644,965	45,000	2nd1992	3,567,819	44,047	2nd1999	3,433,150	42,385	2nd2000	3,297,031	40,704	2nd1995	3,098,475	43,034	1st2001	3,094,841	38,686	4th2004	2,744,018	33,877	5th2002	2,682,439	33,117	3rd2005	2,624,740	32,404	5th1991	2,552,753	31,515	5th1994	2,535,359	46,097	2nd1989	2,535,208	31,299	4th2014	2,464,473	30,806	6th2003	2,454,523	30,303	5th1990	2,415,189	30,190	5th2013	2,357,561	29,106	8th2007	2,164,822	26,726	11th2006	2,153,139	26,582	10th2012	2,102,240	25,954	7th2008	1,950,075	24,376	10th2009	1,907,163	23,545	9th2011	1,755,461	21,672	11th2010	1,733,019	21,395	10th

Attendance was also below 2005 aka the Nats first year when they played in a dilapidated RFK Stadum, and 280,000 below 2004 when the O's had the area to themselves.

Yes.

I know that it is an overestimate, but I had no other way to compute it ....... unless I used an estimate of my own for the missed game, in which case it would have wound up being been an estimate of an estimate. ;)

Yeah; looking at it that way, you can say this is the best turnout since 2002.

Huge drop from 2001 to 2002, even though the team was horrible both years. I wonder if a lot of people stuck around for Cal's last season and then bailed.

Also a huge drop from 2005 to 2006. Probably mostly due to DC businesses getting around to cancelling their tickets, and disgust over the finish in 2005 and Palmeiro.

We still haven't completely overcome that drop from 2005 to 2006. Maybe next year.

I'm sure Cal sold quite a few tickets in 2001, but we were still down 200,000 that year compared to 2000.

    • While it’s not as head turning as last April, I like what Mateo has brought to the team in the early going.  Playing mostly against LHP, he’s hitting .250/.314/.406, and has stolen 6 bases.  His stolen base and big lead off second base afterwards in the 7th was a big distraction to JP Sears during his pitch sequence to Gunnar Henderson, and Sears eventually threw Gunnar a cookie that he clobbered for a 2-run homer.  Palmer commented something like “don’t tell me that speed doesn’t bother a pitcher.”    Overall I feel Mateo is having better strike zone judgment than usual so far.  We know that could change at any minute, but it’s been nice for now.
    • Agree.  That would be ideal.  Especially the leg kick.  I looked for video from last night and couldn't find anything.
    • My hope is it takes a little longer to get going because they are having him make adjustments.
    • Well, I know.  And I really like Cionel, and root hard for him. He did a nice job of turning his season around last year, and I hope he can pull a rabbit out of his hat again.  But I’m not real confident.
    • Really pleasantly surprised that he seemingly has healed up so quickly after the platelet injection.   I had the same injury plus a chip the size of a quarter in my elbow at the tear spot and didn't get surgery either.  This was around 2 years ago.   I was bowling and my elbow just completely blew out during one of my shots.   Turned black and blue and the entire elbow swelled up.   Went to the specialist and got the MRI and xrays and it was a mess.   Of course they recommended surgery but seeing as how I was bowling in multiple tournies and leagues at the time, and lifting weights, I decided against it as surgery would have laid me up for many months.   So I rested it, kept lightly working out, and within 45 days or so the swelling and discoloration went away and I started bowling again and have bowled 10-15 games a week since with little issue.   I just feel twinges now and then.  Working out 4 days a week as well.  So it is possible to come back from this without surgery.   Of course I am not trying to throw a baseball 90 mph every 5 days either.   That is really the only time it hurts, when I throw overhand.  Of course he doesn't have a bone chip in his elbow either.  Just the small tear.   If he can get through the first few games without a problem I think he will last the year.   We shall see.
