You like McFarland?

Not speaking for RZNJ, but I prefer McFarland over Matusz.

Perhaps it's the money the O's are paying him, perhaps it's my own biases. I just can't stand seeing Matusz coming into a game. McFarland at least seems to be occasionally useful. He can also go multiple innings in a mop-up role.

I realize Matusz could have a role as a LOOGY, but I'm not sure he's worth the money or roster spot for that role.

McFarland:

3.79 ERA, 1.506 WHIP, 10.5 H/9, 0.7 HR/9, 3.0 BB/9, 6.0 SO/9

Matusz (as a reliever):

3.16 ERA, 1.170 WHIP, 7.5 H/9, 0.9 HR/9, 3.0 BB/9, 9.7 SO/9

The thing about McFarland is he's god awful against righties and merely OK against lefties. Matusz at least brings the ability to absolutely dominate lefties.

In a perfect world, I don't want to spend the money on Matusz since he's just a LOOGY that pitches around righties. But even more so, I don't want guys like McFarland on the roster just because he can pitch a few innings (and mostly stink while doing so).

I like him better than Matusz. He can at least eat 3-4 innings if needed to. He wasn't good last year but I have some faith in him as a long man. McFarland's splits against LHH's were just as good as Matusz, last year, IIRC.

2015:

McFarland: .232/.267/.317 - .585 OPS

Matusz: .186/.231/.333 - .565 OPS

So, nearly as good. Was surprised to see that considering how his splits were in 2014 (.266/.343/.340 - .683 OPS) and 2013 (.287/.311/.450 - .761 OPS).

I don't know about you but holding lefties to a 565 OPS and only a 186 average all the while only walking 4 batters out of 108 plate appearances is dominating.

And this isn't a fluke thing with Matusz.

2013: .168 /.225/.277 - .502 OPS, only 7 walks

2014: .223/.277 .350 - .626 OPS, only 6 walks

2015: .186 /.231/.333 - .565 OPS, only 4 walks

Now is it possible that McFarland could just be a LOOGY? Yes, I suppose if Buck used him correctly. But he's leaving him out there against righties and righties actually do much better against McFarland than they do Matusz.

Matusz held LH hitters to a .565 OPS last year. McFarland held them to a .585 OPS. Matusz is famous (to me) for giving up the killer home run though. He gave up 4 homers to LH hitters last year. McFarland was not good last year but he was decent the year before. Again, he can at least go 3-4 innings in a pinch. I'd rather have him available as the long man with the chance to match him up late in a game. However, I'd forget the late game matchup altogether and just let Brach, Givens, and O'Day face whoever, and pitch around the dangerous LH hitter if the situation allows it.

Going 3-4 IP with a WHIP starting at 1.500 all the while allowing a career .309/.375/.422 - .797 slash line against righties is bad.

Against righties

In 2014: .324/.352/.424 - .776 OPS

In 2015: .375/.461/.557 - 1.018 OPS

So maybe he can get an uptick in velocity by just pitching against a couple lefties and pitching around righties like Matusz, but McFarland just isn't that good the way he's been used.

The unwritten rule of the OH: thou must not speak badly of Brian Matusz despite how many high pressure situations he blows. Stats are fun but does it equate to all the times Buck puts him lower pressure or mop up. I am sure he is a great guy, nothing personal, just think there are other options available for cheaper. For starters, I would have signed Sean Burnett.

What on earth are you talking about? Matusz is one of the most-maligned Orioles on this board, and has been for years. Please stop with the me-against-the-world act, especially when you're making things up out of whole cloth.
