Struggles Continue as Late Lead Lost in Akron

Six-Run Lead Flips Script in 8-5 Loss

A three-run lead turned into a three-run deficit as Akron pushed home six seventh inning runs to upend the Baysox 8-5 on Friday night from Canal Park. A solid six-inning effort from starter David Hess went was spoiled in the defeat.

Tied at 1-apiece in the fourth inning the Baysox doubled their way to the lead. After Quincy Latimore walked, Chance Sisco doubled him home with a shot down the right field line. Two batters later it was Adrian Marin doubling home Sisco. Immediately following, Drew Dosch joined the fray with a double to left-center off a breaking ball and Bowie was on top 4-1.

Hess would carry a three-run lead through the sixth inning. He scattered nine hits allowing two runs, just one of which earned in his six inning effort.

Trailing 5-2 the Akron offense went to work. Yhoxian Median doubled over the third base bag. Then a hit by pitch and walk loaded the bags. With one down, Bradley Zimmer lined a game-tying triple over the head of centerfielder Julio Borbon and the RubberDucks rally was in motion.

Akron’s Bryson Myles singled home the lead run through a drawn in infield and a two-out, two-run home run from Jeremy Lucas put the finishing touches on the decisive rally. In all, ten men batted and six scored in the Akron seventh.

It was the fifth time this season the Baysox have allowed three runs or more in an inning. The loss was a fourth in a row and seventh in the first eight games for the Baysox.

Despite facing two big league rehabbers, the Lynchburg Hillcats were the only team to score on Friday night, as the visitors shutout the Frederick Keys 4-0 at Nymeo Field. In the game, Kevin Gausman and Brian Matusz combined on 6.1 innings and allowed two earned runs while collaborating on 11 strikeouts. As a staff, Keys pitching recorded a season-high 15 punch outs.

Gausman (0-1) suffered the loss, working the first 3.1 innings. He gave up two runs (one earned) on four hits, walked two and struck out eight. The Hillcats plated their first run in the initial inning, as Greg Allen singled, reached second on a Dorssys Paulino walk before an error by Erick Salcedo at short loaded the bases. One batter later, Yu-Cheng Chang made it 1-0 with an RBI groundout.

In the fourth, Gausman was pulled after giving up a pair of one-out singles and a walk. Max Schuh came out of the pen and allowed a sac-fly to Ivan Castillo. The sac-fly nearly turned into an extra-base hit, but a great diving catch by Jay Gonzalez prevented a multi-run inning.

Matusz entered the game in the fifth and allowed just a solo home run in three innings of work. He gave up two hits, struck out three and did not walk a batter.

Lynchburg added a single marker in the ninth off Luis Gonzalez, as Paulino brought home Castillo from third on an infield single.

Merryweather (2-0) earned the win for Lynchburg, tossing five shutout innings of four-hit baseball. He walked two and struck out three. Jordan Milbrath and Trevor Frank closed things out from there, throwing four shutout innings in relief.

Jefry Rodriguez and Taylor Guilbeau stymied the Shorebirds all night long in a 1-0 loss for Delmarva at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium in Salisbury. Nine of the ten Shorebirds batters struck out at least once, totaling a season-high 16 for the night and 29 in the first two games of the series.

The lone run of the night came in the top of the fourth inning. Suns’ center fielder Victor Robles was at second base with two outs and he scored standing up on Matthew Page’s RBI single up the middle.

For the second straight night, the Shorebirds couldn’t come up with a clutch base hit. Delmarva opened an inning with a baserunner five times but couldn’t push anyone across home plate. After going 0-10 with runners in scoring position last night, the Shorebirds finished tonight’s game 1-11 in those situations. The only hit came from Alex Murphy, when his dribbler to shortstop advanced D.J. Stewart from second to third.

Cory Jones took the tough-luck loss for the Shorebirds. He allowed one run on three base hits in five innings, striking out five along the way. Jones has allowed one earned run in nine innings for Delmarva this year.

Murphy added a double in the ninth to heighten the drama, but back to back strikeouts from pinch-hitter Gerrion Grim and Ryan Mountcastle ended the game. The 2 hour and 17 minute contest was the quickest nine inning game of the season. Murphy finished the night 2-4 and extended his hitting streak to nine games.
