Just looking at our barren farm and wondering what a 2019 team might look like.

LF Stewart/Kim(extended)

CF? Rickard

RF Jones(extended)

Gausman

Harvey

Scott

Lee

Peralta

Bridwell

Pen

CL Brach

How bad is that? And there is the possibility of PA opening the pocket book for a few FA in 2018.

I'm not a big fan of an exercise like this because if we did something like this 3 years ago how many would've counted on CD wieters or Britton being a good closer, schoop was relatively uncertain.

So many things can change

I agree.

It sometimes is not easy to speculate one year in advance (for example the 2011 Orioles and the 2012 Orioles), let alone 3 years in advance.

I think it gets opened for that guy named Machado.

The thought of Manny Machado wearing a Yankees uniform in a few years ...... it's almost like imagining a circa 1964 Brooks Robinson wearing a Yankees uniform.

It could happen. I hope that it doesn't.

Can some of you have a little optimism and say that we sign Manny? If I had a dollar for every time someone said, "there's no way we sign Davis" I'd have quite a bit saved up right now.

We signed AJ. We signed Davis. Manny's better than both. We'll sign Manny.

I think that the Orioles will sign Machado.

I opined that it was possible that they didn't ...... which it is.

The difference is Davis was going on 30 and is a 1B.

Manny will be 26. Hitting his prime. A pillar of consistency minus his injury season (2014). He'll have many suitors.

I'm not convinced Davis had many suitors.

I'm equally worried about Duquette AND Showalter being gone. The farm system is something I worry about, but we do have 2016/2017/2018 to draft more college players. But it is scary.

This is what I am most concerned about. You build a team from the top down. Good management and coaching is hard to find; players, not as difficult.

Problem is that we shouldn't have signed Davis, and now that we are stuck with him we have less $$$ available for Manny

There are two ways to sign Manny IMO. One, offer 10/300 M with an opt out at year 5. Two, offer him a 5 year extension for 155 That's more than he could expect to make if he took 2 years arb. and got 40 M AAV for his first 3 years of FA.

    • JD Martinez would be a more of the same kind of acquisition. He is not an impact bat and he is a periphery (around the margins) piece at this point. Why not set the bar higher and sign Alonso? Acquiring Pete Alonso allows you to move on from Mountcastle and put Mayo (where he belongs right now) DH. It also allows you to move on from O'Hearn.  Alonso gets everyday ABs and Mayo does. Those two things to a large degree help solve the lineup imbalance against LHP. I know Alonso will cost real money. But again who are we paying? The money is there. It's time to start using it (if we want to win in October).
    • Your full quote said to use him as a DH for 100+ games. If you are worried about him being covered through his injuries - how can you assume he wouldn't be injured at the end of the season, going into the playoffs?
    • Here’s an exercise… it’s the postseason and the bases are loaded. The Santa scenario. Who on our current roster would you rather have up over JD Martinez?  Same fact pattern as Santander’s AB.
    • I think the title of this thread told you his status
    • Why did you pare down my quote about it being for the post season and not just 162?  People, always so quick to clown someone. Lmao. Damn. At least use my whole quote bro.  If you think that we don’t need at least one proven playoff bat then that’s ok. My point is, that we have enough 1B/DH options to carry JD through his ups/downs/injuries over 162 for his experience, leadership, and playoff experience.  You can disagree, but quote me right.
    • It's kind of amazing to me how no one knows Suarez's free agent status. I've heard it both ways. He's Schrodinger's baseball player.
    • Since JD Martinez has a career OPS of .950 in the postseason across 12 series and 151 plate appearances, I am sure our FO will have no use for him.  A veteran player who has experienced a lot of postseason success rarely helps young teams get to that next level.
