Over a full year, approximately 18 fewer PA per lineup spot. 18 less at no. 2, 36 less at no. 3, etc. -
This topic has been discussed at some length in the Gunnar thread, starting about here. I can see arguments both ways. Gunnar gets more bases empty at bats than the other players by virtue of leading off, but he also gets more at bats, period. He’s probably missed out on some RBI opportunities, but he’s creating them for others. He’s 4th in the majors in runs scored.

Also, regarding the 5 options, looks like based on the MLB site glossary it's not the 5th option where you waive the player. It's "after" 5 options that you can no longer option them. So you must waive the player on the 6th optioning of the year: -

That makes sense. When we called Vespi up for the DH it likely didn’t count. I’m guessing, Norby up for Mateo on 7 day IL concussion list Vespi up for one of Akin/Tate just to deload Akin a bit. I wouldn’t be surprised if it is Viera though. But I think we want to take a chance on that arm. Can we afford to?
