Official Orioles Draft Pick Thread

In the 23rd and 24th round the Orioles select two SoCal pitchers with some good upside.

Anthony Kirbis, RHP, 6'2" 200

Kirbis, with a solid pro body at 6-foot-2, 210 pounds, throws harder more consistently in the 92-94 mph range. A fan of pitching guru Tom House, he came to San Diego to meet with House and decided to transfer nearby, walking on. He throws a decent curveball but needs to locate it better. He led the team in wins and had a better season than Lowe (8-2, 3.08 vs. 4-5, 3.65).

Dan Klein, Servite HS, RHP 6'3" 195lbs.

UCLA recruit Dan Klein has more polish as a football quarterback, though he'll focus on baseball for the Bruins. He has a feel for spinning a breaking ball to go with fringe-average fastball velocity, good changeup and excellent athleticism at 6-foot-3 and 200 pounds.

I really like the Kirbis pick.

Tony, what do you think of the Widlansky pick? It seems like he's a steal. FAU is a good baseball program.

He's an interesting pick because he missed almost his entire junior year with the hamstring injury after a solid sophomore year. Obviously he put up some impressive numbers this year after being named Sun Belt Player of the Year and Louisville Slugger First Team All-America honors. His .433 batting average, 104 hits, 15 home runs and 69 RBI completed one of the most dominant season in FAU history.

He broke the school record for hits, total bases and batting average. He also carried an 18-game hitting streak into the conference tournament during which he hit .513 with four doubles and six homers for a .795 slugging percentage. He walked just 24 times in 240 at bats and had 28 Ks, so I would expect his K:BB ratio to be ok, but nothing outstanding in the minors.

He'll be 23 in November so he needs to get going quick in pro ball. I'd like to see him started at Delmarva like Blake Davis last year. Get his feet wet and see what he does at Frederick next year.

Overall, it looks like a nice bat to add to the organization.

Brandon Cooney - FAU

Is this a joke or what? Why was this guy picked? What a waste.

7.36 2-5 22 7 0 0/0 0 55.0 77 54 45 33 57 15 0 6 233 .330

The guy has a legitimate Whip of 2? WTF?

Cooney is huge...listed at 6'6" 240. Who knows, maybe between he and the 6'7" 1B from Richmond they are trying to put togoether an All-Bodyguard team? :D
