Orioles manager Buck Showalter talked with Stan "The Fan" Charles and Craig Heist about the outlook for the team's 2017 starting rotation and the progress he saw from some of the team's young pitchers in 2016.

Tillman, Bundy, Gausman are not a bad top 3 but it's the issue with the horrors that are Jimenez, Gallardo, and Miley that make the rotation well below average overall.

If I was a national media guy, I'd probably say something about the post All-Star game ERA's of Tillman being 4.45 and Bundy being 4.52. Otherwise, I would never mention that.

Tillman pitched hurt most of the second half and Bundy was out of gas.

I think Tillman, Bundy, and Gausman are all good for ERA in the 4 neighborhood. Miley I think will be decent. He showed flashes. So I'm comfortable with four of the five spots.

We have potential. Hopefully a fresh voice will help Wilson and Wright, keep Ubaldo from falling apart, stop Gausman from giving up 0-2, 1-2 dingers, and turn Bundy into a bigger beast.

Hope we can move Gallardo.

The biggest unknown is whether there is yet another level up for both Gausman and Bundy, and, if so, how big a move up. Do they become like Tillman or do they go on up a notch into an Arrieta, Scherzer, Sale, Verlander type. If that happens, we be sitting pretty.

Now, if we can only find three guys who can play defense and get on base.

Buck is a great manager because he knows how to manage people. He also knows how to manage the press. What he says to Stan the Fan and what he truly believes can be two very different things. Bottom line is that we are stuck with this staff next year. The three worst pitchers all are signed to large contracts. They aren't going anywhere. So Buck lauds them in the press and hopes for the best.
