Earl wouldn't put up with this.

Weaver managed mostly great teams during his tenure as Orioles manager from 1969 through 1982.

He "put up" with a team that nosedived down the stretch and went 73-89 overall in 1986. The season before, he took over for Joe Altobelli in June, and only managed to guide them to a 53-52 record the rest of the way.

With very few exceptions, managers largely put up with whatever team that they have. Any team that is having a bad game offensively is going to seem "lethargic", and if they are having a bad game defensively, the manager won't necessarily have an elixir for it.

I understand your pining for "the Good Old Days," but as Billy Joel once said, the Good Old Days weren't always good, and tomorrow's not as bad as it seems.

We better get it together in NY. We could be 7-8 games out if we play like tonight...Yankees winning again...

Here is the good news: after this weekend, the O's will only see the Yankees again in September, and Boston at the end of August. Plenty of time to right the ship against lesser competition.
