The 40-game mark

This is the point of the season where most MLB experts agree that the tale has been told about who are contenders and who are pretenders. I mean, if you are hovering around .500 there is hope. But if you are on pace to lose 113 games, time to be realistic.

Manny is on pace for 52 homers, 144 RBI.

What is the team's goal now, to save Buck's job?  The playoffs are out of reach.  I am a big Buck fan, but I could see him making decisions to maximize wins this year over the future of the club.  Of course he would be sabotaging his own plan by continuing to play Davis and Tillman.

Chris Davis is on pace for his usual 200 K's.  Along with 16 HR and 52 RBI.  More than 99% of those will be with his current team.

So, you think there’s a chance he’s with another team? ?

Oh, you’re not going to tell me that this team doesn’t have a bunch of four game streaks in them (ok, sure they have to start another streak tomorrow and lose only one game in between).

Hold on, I have to get some more orange kool-aid....

A slump, a bad month, is likely.

Of course.    I do think if Manny can maintain good plate discipline, this could be a career year.

In 2016, Manny’s OPS was over 1.000 pretty consistently all the way through June 2.    For the rest of the year he was at .814.    His ISO remained high but his average and walk rate came down.    I think when Manny makes pitchers throw strikes and doesn’t get pull happy, he’s just a fantastic hitter.

So, I haven’t done my usual monthly breakdown for April, because it was too depressing.   But at the quarter pole, here’s where we rank in the AL in some key categories:

Runs/game: last, at 3.90

BA: last, at .230

OBP: last, at .295

SLG: last, at .392

OPS: last, at .687

Runs allowed: 2nd worst, at 5.70

ERA: 3rd worst, at 5.18

Starters’ ERA: 2nd worst, at 5.65

Rdrs: Last, at -35

Rtot: Last, at -25

Fielding %: 2nd worst, at .979

Run differential: last, at -72

Enough said?

So, there's a chance we could improve?

    • They haven't said anything, but the radar seems to indicate that it will be a while. Looks like slow-moving rain.
    • It is SOOO frustrating to be here perfectly dry! It hasnt rained one spit since I got here at 3! Yet here we are, biding our time for what you’re saying might be 3 more hours before it even starts?!? Totally taking advantage of fans, getting them to spend money on concessions I guess? For NO reason. Does Nicole make the decision? Hyde? Both managers? The umpires? Is it protecting the pitching staffs? Sorry to be whiny. I did already stay a time in the member’s clubhouse, got my complimentary pulled pork and cole slaw at the Picnic Perch, used the charging station, listened to the Saturday live band, scouted new club level eateries (“sauced and tossed” chicken bites with mac & cheese has my attention for later on during the delay…) Make the best of it I guess. Did they run the Preakness main race yet?
    • At the game and not sure why they didn’t just start the game and delay as needed. Not doing a thing here and could’ve already been into the 2nd/3rd inning by now. Yes, I do see rain over the EC area but it’s moving painfully slow.
    • Cal is talking about someone being rushed to the majors?  He must have a short memory.  Cal didn't start very well himself.   He was 5 for 39 in 1981 and then started out 1982 going 5 for 56.  That is 10 for 95 to start his career.  I remember the story of how Reggie Jackson straightened a struggling, young Ripken, so I looked up the story of the start of Cal's rookie season in 1982.  So if advice from Jackson broke Ripken out of a slump in 1982, maybe Ripken should have some advice for Jackson in 2024.  That statement might fry a couple of brains on here.  Ripken turned out just fine, so we should not be worried about Jackson Holliday.   https://baseball.fandom.com/wiki/Cal_Ripken_Jr. He homered in his first at-bat on Opening Day and then fell into a deep slump going 4 for 55. Apparently worried that he may be sent down to the minor leagues, a May 1 talk with Reggie Jackson at third base during a game seemed to help Ripken improve for the rest of the season. After the talk, Cal raised his average from .141 to as high as .284 before ending with a .264 average.
    • Wow I thought he wasn’t good enough to be claimed by anyone! At least that’s what I was told by some people on here.    The Giants must not know what a terrible ballplayer they’re getting.
    • MASN replaying this Covid-season game against the Braves again!? I thought this sort of thing might stop with the new ownership group. Guess I’ll go for a run.
