Is anyone really knocking on the door at his position though?  Mancini, but he can DH assuming we cut ties with Trumbo.

And I agree with you in principle, but don't see the Orioles eating that much money, so I would prefer my outcome to giving him any more chances as an everyday player until he proves he's a different player than he has been for the past two plus years.

Disregard, this has already been addressed.  My bad.

I prefer any outcome where he's not on the roster on opening day, 2019.  He's had two years of absolutely terrible play, he doesn't deserve a third.

I don't think that's realistic, though.  I think we're stuck with him for awhile.

We're not going anywhere the next few years. Play him as long as he is not blocking someone. Once Trumbo is gone there's more room to play Mancini. last 7 days:

.368 .429 .421 .850

 second half:

.220 .300 .409

.709

He might even be serviceable next year, Who knows?

We agree 100% in this regard then.

No, he does block a prospect.

For argument's sake, let's assume that Jones isn't back next year.  With Davis, Trumbo and Mancini back, you're looking at an outfield of Mullins in CF, Mancini in LF and Hays/Diaz in RF.  Trumbo at DH and Davis at 1st.

You'd much rather have an outfield of Diaz, Mullins, and Hays with Mancini at 1st.  And Mancini isn't great at 1st base but at least he's not in the outfield.

You're correct in the sense that he's not blocking a stud 1st base prospect but he does hinder the team from a roster flexibility perspective.

Mancini should DH, because he is poor defensively at 1B or LF. Trumbo presents an issue in this regard, but I'm hoping we can mange to deal him this off-season.

I disagree. I'd rather try other options. Not Tumbo. Not Davis.

Yes, except are you growing a mystery first baseman somewhere we all don’t know about?  Garabez Rosa?  Aderlin Rodriguez?  Pedro?  No better options for 2019 that I see.

I vote that if you are paying him, play him.

For no other reason than to keep him around the length of the contract so when the Orioles become a faint hope in 2021 his play/contract is a constant reminder of "WHY YOU NEVER GIVE MORE THAN A THREE YEAR CONTRACT TO ANYONE."

Isn’t there a good chance that w/o Davis planted at first we’d be grooming Mountcastle as a future 1st baseman? Given his offensive upside, adequate glove but weak throwing arm he sure looks like he could handle the position a lot better than third.

Yeah... I believe I've mentioned it before, but if Mountcastle isn't long for 3B, 1B seems like the next logical possibility.

I negotiate some kind of a buyout, if possible. If Davis side does not entertain any buyout negotiations, then I cut him loose and bite the bullet. You cannot run the worst player in the history of the game out there for another season.

There are no buyouts.

    • Seems that Tampa might be selling. Civale is heading to the Brewers.
    • He was brought in for the bottom of the order too, although it was high leverage. Nicely played by Hyde, imho.
    • Congrats to Kimbrel on tying KRod for 4th place on the all time saves list.   He’s clearly no longer an elite closer,  but that’s still an amazing accomplishment.   He’s 41 saves behind Lee Smith for 3rd place and it’s certainly possible that Kimbrel will hold on long enough to catch Smith.   2010-18: 91% save rate 2019-24: 82% save rate
    • Baseball America.  30 prospects to know in the DSL. Elvin Garcia, SS, Orioles Signed for $500,000 out of the Dominican Republic, the 17-year-old Garcia has shown a promising mix of tools and skills with more physical upside remaining in his 6-foot-2, 165-pound frame. He’s a switch-hitter with good plate discipline and a knack for finding the sweet spot to make contact at a high clip. He’s hitting .370/.507/.611 through 71 plate appearances, drawing more walks (14) than strikeouts (13). Garcia hasn’t homered yet and isn’t a big slugger, but he makes consistent quality contact with a lot of doubles and triples that should start climbing over the fence in the next few years as he layers on more strength. He’s an athletic shortstop with plus speed, a plus arm and smooth actions at the position, along with a high baseball IQ. He’s one of most exciting shortstops the Orioles have signed out of Latin America in years.    Esteban Mejia, RHP, Orioles The Orioles signed Mejia out of the Dominican Republic for $175,000 in January. The 17-year-old righthander had been up to 93 mph at the time and reached 95 in early spring outings. Now his fastball seldom dips under 93 after making another jump that has him reaching 98 mph and sitting at 93-96. At a listed 6-foot-3, 175 pounds, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him crack 100 mph eventually, but he’s already overpowering hitters in the DSL, where he has a 3.38 ERA in 10.2 innings over four starts, striking out 15 with five walks. Mejia’s fastball was his main pitch as an amateur, but he has quickly developed a slider that he shows aptitude to spin to get a good amount of swing-and-miss.
    • Yeah , for now.  We have to keep our pace while they’re struggling . We have upcoming 3 games series against them 7/12-7/14 before AS Break
    • Yes, Urias might be closer to DFA’ing than real trade value. Mateo is useful and has some value but we are using that value.  Westburg shouldn’t go anywhere.  Until a larger trade is made clearing the logjam or an injury, my preference would be Mayo up, Kjerstad down as I think Mayo takes at bats away from worse players.
