May 2024

This month, two non-prospects were obvious choices for MiL Plsyer and Pitcher of the Month:

Player of the Month

28-year old Daniel Johnson led the org in SLG, OPS, HR (tie) and RBI.  He hit .350/.439/.725 with 6 HR and 23 RBI pm

In the prospect division, I’m going with 19-year old Leandro Arias, .333/.400/.667 with 3 HR and 13 RBI in 16 games.

Honorable mentions to Ellis Cuevas at .992 OPS, Heston Kjerstad .964 with 14 RBI in 16 games after returning to the minors, and Stiven Acevedo at .953.

Pitcher of the Month

In between stinking up the major leagues, 27-year old Jonathan Heasley pitched 16 scoreless innings with an 0.813 WHIP.

In the prospect division, 21-year old Edgar Portes pitched to an 0.42 ERA in 20.2 innings, with an 0.919 WHIP and 11.8 K/9.

Honorable mentions: Eccel Correa 0.96 ERA in 18.2 IP, and Trey Gibson with a 1.76 ERA, 1.044 WHIP, and 15.3 K/9 in 15.1 IP.

June 2024 - Batters

There were some outrageously good offensive performances in June, featuring six hitters who had at least a 1.000 OPS in 50+ PA for the month, and another five over .900.   Here are the first six, in order of OPS:

Coby Mayo, .400/.492/.891, 7 HR, 17 RBI

Jordan Sanchez, .400/.481/.800, 5 HR, 21 RBI

Elvin Garcia, .400/.537/.660, 0 HR, 16 RBI

Adam Retzbach, .308/.439/.615, 2 HR, 13 RBI

Mac Horvath, .314/.395/.614, 4 HR, 13 RBI

Aron Estrada, .356/.416/.589, 4 HR, 15 RBI

Honorable mentions:  Nick Maton .959 OPS, Jose Mejia .923, Reed Trimble .917, Felix Amparo .913, Luis Guevara .901.  Billy Cook (.811 OPS)also deserves mention for placing 2nd in the org in both homers (6) and RBI (20).

Overall, while it's a close call, I have to go with Mayo, who missed the first 10 games of June and still led the org in homers (7) and was 3rd in RBI (17).   He did compile some of his numbers in a four-game rehab stint at Aberdeen, but his OPS back at Norfolk also was a super impressive 1.208.

There were really a lot of interesting offensive performances, but I must say, Adam Retzbach's really came out of nowhere. He was sitting at .132/.286/.165 heading into June.

I'll post the pitchers separately.

June 2024 - Pitchers

There isn't as much to choose from on the pitching side.   Setting the bar at 15 IP, we have the following pitchers under a 3.00 ERA for the month (in IP order):

Tucker Davidson, 23.0 IP, 1.17 ERA, 0.739 WHIP, 10.2 K/9, 8.7 K/BB.

Cameron Weston, 19.2 IP, 1.83 ERA, 0.915 WHIP, 11.0 IP, 4.0 K/BB.

Edgar Portes, 19.2 IP, 2.75 ERA, 1.475 WHIP, 13.3 K/9, 3.6 K/BB

Riley Cooper, 18.0 IP, 2.00 ERA, 1.222 WHIP, 6.0 K/9, 1.2 K/BB

Dylan Heid, 16.1 IP, 1.10 ERA, 0.674 WHIP, 10.5 K/9, 9.5 K/BB

Seth Johnson, 16.1 IP, 1.65 ERA, 1.469 WHIP, 11.6 K/9, 1.3 K/BB

For me, I'm going with Davidson overall, and Weston in the prospect division.

In the under 15 IP group, you had DSL starter Esteban Luna (0.64 ERA), Norfolk reliever Trey McGough (1.26), Bowie/Norfolk relievers Ryan Hennen (1.84) and Aberdeen reliever Yaqui Rivera (1.93) all coming in under 2.00 ERA for the month.
