Perhaps you’re right , he could upgrade our pen now . But I can’t see Elias pulling trigger on Crochet in either case -

Crochet seems like the worst of both worlds. He can’t help you as a starter, and he’s limited to how often he can pitch as a reliever. If this team wasn’t in contention, sure…cool pickup. But why not just get a real reliever and a starter that isn’t innings limited? -

Yeah that’s a good question . It’s challenging not only trying to trade for help but at same time we have competition from other buyers (as you mentioned) . For this postseason no less. I can picture Elias making a fair offer but I don’t think he would overpay though -

He definitely was a starter for his first 2 years before becoming a full time reliever. Either way, the point remains, this is uncharted territory for him as he’s exclusively a starter. Personally I just can’t see him going more than 120 IP over last years 24 IP or so. Chris Sale is probably the blueprint. Went from around 70 IP to 190 the next year. That leaves, what, around 40 IP with half the season left. That’s not much room at all. That gives you 1-2 innings a start and some skipped starts. Basically he’s a reliever the rest of the year. But he hasn’t pitched 3-4 times a week, so he’ll be restricted there, too. -
While I believe we should take the best player available, regardless of position, I doubt we take a catcher this high unless he's clearly #1 on our boards at that time. -

I don't think the price will be lower and he could be an upgrade for the pen.
