I hated it at the time though I somehow missed voting in the poll.  I hated it again in my comment in the thread in 2016. And now.  It was the worst Duquette move imho.   I think I said something like wishing Dan had gone to Toronto...lol.  Trading our remaining top pitching prospect for two months of a left fielder that did not move the needle in a season that was not going anywhere fast anyway.  I supported the Arrieta deal at the time, the Miller deal absolutely then and niw, the Norris for Hader deal at the time and even now it made sense...I understood them.   But that deal for Parra and the Snider deal were just completely perplexing.  And, of course, Dan never deigned to explain his thinking to us fans anyway except for rosy, spin comments.   But, hey, that is all water under the bridge and we are moving on!!

On a Cubs blog, they were speculating about Trey and postulated Ian Happ and Adbert Alzolay coming back.  Thoughts about that scenario?  Sounds pretty fair to me off first glance.

The answer was simple ...He was trying to win! They were unable to get anything better based on the fact that nobody valued our system. So they settled for 2nd tier moves as it was the bext they could do

It wasn't a team that could win.

I think that's irrelevant.... They were competitive and fans were buying tickets. They did what they could with what they had to offer. I think the moves were thoroughly disappointing and did nothing to move the needle. But I think the outcry would've been considerable if they had done nothing.

What?

So the proper move for a GM is to trade future assets for present assets when he knows that the team is not going make the playoffs?

Because he's scared of being criticized by the fanbase?

He was trying to win ....Likely with pressure from Angelos

I'm not saying that he cared or listened to fans!

Corn you know as well as I do that the fans here would've went off the deep end if they did nothing. Probably not all but many!

The team needed a lot more help than Parra.  If he couldn't realize that he wasn't doing his job very well.  That team wasn't close.

If you check the Parra thread you will see posters who "went off the deep end" for him trading a future asset for Parra.

That article also speculates on younger arms instead of MLB ready talent, mentioning Justin Steele or Ryan Jensen.

I'd vote no on Jensen since he's 44 years old.

I think we can agree that Peter was involved

Not from me.   It was not a good move then or now.  But, it is irrelevant that's for sure because Dan is no longer running the Orioles and we are going to be doing things very differently I believe and already have been.

No I don't agree with that.  I think that was Dan Duquette's call period.  I get a little tired of palming off EVERY bad decision away from Dan and on to Angelos.  Davis, sure.  But the Parra trade for Zach Davies?   I don't believe he was likely involved any at all unless you can show me evidence somewhere that proves your point.

Maybe they meant Jackie Jensen.....he had a cumulative 27.9 WAR....oh, he would be 92....so probably not...lol.

Angelos had a long history of meddling

IMO Pat Gillick and Frank Wren is all the proof you should need.

    • It's fine for GRod to get a spot on the All-Star  team. I hope he doesn't warm up or pitch.
    • 1. From the beginning of time until roughly 1980 an average MLB game was somewhere between 1:50 and 2:30, all shorter than today's games with the pitch clock. It's not primarily the pitch clock. 2. Even if the pitch clock were to be shown to increase injuries by some some amount, do we really want to go back to a game where the average time is 3+ hours and increasing every year? The glacial pace of pre-clock baseball was killing interest in the sport. MLB had become a recurring meme online because it was sooooo slloooooowwww. I'll take 10% or 20% more injuries if it means we get a game that's played at a reasonable pace and gametimes in line with the other major sports that play multiple times a week.
    • I was joking.  Always make for a good laugh anytime Elias picks somebody up off the scrap heap.  I actually agree with you though, his numbers at times are pretty decent.  Not a bad depth piece, especially if we pull ahead of the Yankees and need someone to eat some innings late in the season.
    • Definitely agree on Gunnar swing timing — kinda looked like Cowser last night where late on FB and ahead of offspeed/breaking balls.  Was the same on Sunday too. Re: Kjerstad and high cheese. Keep in mind that Kirby has 99th percentile values for his fastball (and also per baseball savant, mostly locates it up in the zone).  It’s probably the best fastball in the game right now for SPs (edit, just looked it up, and only guy I see at 100 pitch value for FB is Crochet).
    • Like I said the other day, it would be nice to hear from some scouts, the org or whoever about all the walks, lack of power, lack of BA, etc…is he tweaking things? Is the elbow bothering him to where he can’t drive the ball? Is he getting nothing to hit?     I’m surprised someone from the Banner hasn’t gotten into this because it’s obviously a big story and one that should be reported on.
    • One thing to note is that Jackson made swing tweaks his first three weeks back in Norfolk but then abandoned them because they “didn’t feel great”. From this Baltimore Banner article:  “Earlier, as he fiddled, Holliday felt he was “surviving” and “didn’t feel great” about where his swing was, even though he produced at the Triple-A level upon his return. That has since changed. Over the last two weeks, particularly, Holliday’s return to the mechanics he’s more familiar with has helped him get back on track.” His contact rate really dropped off when he reverted back to his familiar mechanics. I worry that he gave up on the changes too soon. First three weeks back vs. after (includes tracked pitches and non-bunts)   PAs    K%           wOBA  xwOBA whiff % 4/27-5/18 91 19.8% .366 .349 21.6% 5/19-7/2 118 28.8% .392 .337 32.1%     PAs    EV      hard hit % barrel/PA 4/27-5/18 91 89.5 44.4% 4.4% 5/19-7/2 118 89.8 44.6% 4.2%
    • Sure. And his ligaments would have likely snapped, and he'd have put that college degree to good use instead of being a ballplayer. Or he would have thrown at 90% like most everyone else and topped out with Cedar Rapids in the Three-I League.
