Who are the likely candidates for Aberdeen’s rotation?

22nd rounder Jake Lyons was given the start tonight and threw 4 perfect innings, striking out 7.   Not bad!   I’ll be interested to hear what the folks who went to see Rutschman have to say about Lyons.

He was just overpowering Hudson Valley. Worked quick, attacked the plate (wasn't missing by a lot when he did miss), and generated a lot of "right at the fielder" contact when they DID hit the ball.

Didn't throw any type of breaking ball much, just attacked with the fastball.

So what were the 82 mph and 78 mph pitches then? I saw a good mix myself.

Some brief notes on some Aberdeen relievers.

Malachi Emond - throws a fastball that's either a cutter or has significant natural cut, 88-90mph, nifty little late breaking splitter and a below average slider. Long arm action, never going to sniff average command. I'd be curious if he could develop a 4S fastball that was a bit harder, but most likely an org guy.

Shelton Perkins - 89-90 fastball with a wicked slider, plus pitch. Some deception in the delivery but I can't see that velocity working on a fairly straight fastball. Also throws a changeup, but it isn't good. Will need to add velocity or develop enough command of the slider that he can pitch off it if he's going to be more than an org guy.

Kade Strowd - 90-93mph fastball, commands it well, more of a starter look, has a fringy slider and change. Command should make him interesting in the lower minors at least. Will need to develop the secondaries, not ready to call him more than an org guy yet.

Morgan McSweeney - 90-93, some hop, hides the ball a bit, tight breaking slider, high spin pitch. Threw some changeups but didn't show the ability to control them.

Connor Gillispie - 88-91, big time ride, high spin fastball. Drop and drive, gets down the mound well. Slider with big two plane break, comfortable throwing for strikes or chases. Threw a few changeups with significant armside fade and tumble, but doesn't have consistent feel for the pitch, wastes it often.

Just a note, all these velocities (and the post before this) might be low. Leonardo Rodriguez was 89-93 on the same stadium gun and I have him reliably at 92-95 and 92-96 in separate starts. Starter Kevin Magee isn't a big velocity guy, but was just 84-88. So I think it might be a tick or two slow, not sure though.

Nice tandem outing today from the law firm of Hammer & Roth.

Hammer: 4 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 6 K’s, ERA now 1.40.

Roth: 4 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 6 K’s, ERA now 0.55.

Unfortunately, Aberdeen was shut out and Hammer took the tough loss.

His second gem with Adley again in a combined no hitter!  @Luke-OH

"Lyons, 20, covered the first five innings, striking out five while throwing 41 of 61 pitches for strikes. He faced one over the minimum in the outing, with a leadoff walk in the third inning representing the lone blemish on his performance. It was Lyons’ third career start as a professional after the Orioles took him in the 22nd round of this year’s Draft out of Oklahoma State. Overall, the 6-foot-5 right-hander has compiled a 3.27 ERA with 27 strikeouts and two walks in 22 innings spanning 10 outings."

I got a really poor report on Lyons from a non-Orioles prospect guy who was at his previous outing. I haven’t seen him yet.

I guess that Vermont has a poor group of players then.  Nine straight no-hit innings.  His release point (above, at least, is good ? ).  I was hoping for Adley's comments on what pitches he threw, etc.  Anyway, thanks for responding.  The guy from St. Katherine's is interesting only since he was a non drafted free agent and the last guy with 3 punch outs (Kyle Martin went to my high school in Oceanside, NY) to seal the deal was pretty cool.  But the story line of all of the successes in the pitching arena is encouraging anyway.

    • You think we are signing Burnes?
    • Oh, I thought he was talking about the rotation right now.
    • No. Better yet ABSOLUTELY NOT!!!!  We do we need to take on anything associated with him or take on that kind of pr hit and risk? I hope he gets a shot at redemption … somewhere else. Why can’t we just acquire/trade for a current MLB pitcher who is already good and doesn’t come with baggage? Is that too much to ask?
    • My big issue with him besides the zero defensive value is he's batting .227 and has only 5 doubles which tells me he's probably a mistake hitter. That's a big red flag for me as well when I look at stats, especially lower level guys. Guys with decent home run numbers and low 2B numbers typically are guys who feast on those middle-middle pitches, but are not making consistent hard contact to get those 2B numbers up. Now I'm going off memory here and haven't really watched him a ton this year running, but he's pretty dang slow from what I remember. So now we have a short, slow, 1B/DH who has some ability to make decent swing decisions on Low-A hitters, but hits for a low average and doesn't show a lot of extra base power. So is he a guy that you perhaps follow to see if he's a guy that develops more game power and allows his bat to carry him up the chain? Perhaps. But I just don't know what he would be in the majors besides a right-handed DH if he develops more power. How many are those are now in the game? I mean, perhaps his absolute upside is a Yermín Mercedes type, but I imagine if he is a late bloomer guy who suddenly starts to rake at the upper levels, it will probably be for his 2nd or 3rd organization as those guys typically bounce around.
    • Thanks for sharing all of the formula / data prospect trackers, I don’t have the patience to follow them on Twitter so I appreciate the updates here. I do put value in that when projecting offense and they do have data that we don’t have.  RZNJ and Tony have a good point that the robo scout types are generally not going to consider defense (at least not fully), and as everyone knows that’s a massive difference in value for C v. 1B/DH. So for Mordan I’d only really put weight on the robo scout if it said he was a good prospect even as solely a 1B, and I’m guessing he’s not.  I am curious to track development of C like Willems and Mordan because I think any C in the system behind Basallo are prime trade chips. If Mordan has good offensive data but bad defense, seems like a nice guy to try to sell another team on at the trade deadline.
    • I am curious to see what happens with the Astros and Verlander.  Looks like they may be heating up making it irrelevant but if they end up being a seller and he shows he is healthy before the deadline I think Verlander is the guy Elias targets.  I think with our new ownership and low payroll no reason we cannot take on the remainder of that contract and he could be the perfect replacement for Bradish.
