That's fair. But it looks to me like he'll be good enough to get more than a few starts for the O's, especially if a starter is traded. He has what looks like an easy, repeatable motion, and he throws strikes.

To be fair, that comment was made before Eshelman recovered from the first inning. A few posts up from that one, crow was eaten (his words) on that earlier comment. I think Eshelman's stuff is good enough so long as he can locate his pitches.

I remember a scouting report or something on him saying his pitches have just enough movement to miss barrels and that's what was seen tonight after he settled down in the first. If he can find the same success he had in the minors (2018 aside), he might be ok. It's not like soft tossers can't be successful in the majors. Arroyo, Hendricks, Kuechel et al as well as the obvious guys and knucklers. It'll be tougher for him, but so long as he can command his stuff and the movement is enough, he's got a chance. We shall see.

Definitely enough in his first start to see more. No strikeouts is a little concerning.

I’m pretty sure Means is this year’s Chris Waters; but don’t tell anyone.

Chris Waters had a 5.79 ERA in Norfolk, got called up because it was his turn in the rotation and the O's second choice to start that day was Ty Wigginton.  Outside of his first eight-inning, one-hit start his career ERA in the majors was 6.45.

This year's Chris Waters is Jimmy Yacabonis.

Yac has never had a start like the one Chris Waters had.

In regards to Eshelman, glad to see he kept the ball on the ground.  But not being able to get at least a couple strikeouts, especially in this era, is troubling.

He did have a Complete-Game Shutout against the Blue Jays later that season.

But as you said, his career in the Majors was not long or particularly effective.
