What are DII-III players? And what does that signify? I probably should know but don’t.

Division II and Division III players as in what level of baseball they played in college. We drafted a guy from randolph macon (D-III), like northwest missouri or something like that (DII). I have no idea what level the colorado school or mines is but what we got a guy from there. These were just the ones off the top of my head but there are a couple more we drafted. I think it's safe to say that we drafted a lot more D-II and D-III players than anyone else.

I guess that refers to the size of the school and therefore the perceived quality of the player.

I have a student whose parents both attended the Colorado school of mines, haha.

do you know that draft pick’s name?

Here's a good breakdown of what determines what level Universities and schools play in by NCAA standards.

Here might be a fun one...Some have suggested that Elias uses personal scouting to determine makeup value and predominantly uses modeling for performance. Is that accurate? How does being largely restricted to makeup evaluations affect how scouts enjoy their work?

How many of the players that we drafted this year were part of the regional workouts that the O’s hosted before the draft, and who are they specifically?  Did Elias bring this practice with him from Houston?

With less data available on high school players than college players, does this mean that we relied exclusively on our scouts for picks like Gunnar Henderson & Darell Hernaiz, or did they also factor in stats & Trackman data when putting a value on them?

How heavily does Elias value/weigh a player’s makeup, and how is makeup quantified in his & Sig’s scouting/draft models?

I will say this, during the draft I asked my contact what he thought about the Orioles draft?  His response was "Gunnar!" Sounds like he's really high this draft pick.

Gunnar!

I am really excited about Gunnar.

Did the overall draft philosophy change after the Gunnar pick was made?  Did he focus on more "low leverage, signable" guys so that the money would be there to sign Gunnar?

Questions Selected:

1.)    How do you view the O's first draft under Elias?
2.)    Was the selection of so many hitters over pitchers a philosophy, or was it just a matter of BPA?
3.)    What metrics were you guys focused on and how did that lead to the selection of any particular players?
4.)    Give us one guy from the later rounds that you think is a steal?
5.)    How much of the decision-making process is driven by Sig’s draft model and what are some of the input criteria to said model?
6.)    Do you think it is getting harder for Elias to get the players who meet his criteria, given that there are two other GM’s who worked with him in Houston and may have similar criteria, and that the Astros’ draft philosophy has been pretty well publicized at this point?
7.)    In this draft, we selected a handful of DII and DIII players. As a scout under Elias regime, how do you evaluate the players in relation to DI and/or HS guys?
8.)    What information was discussed between picks if he was in the war room with Elias in the past. Especially if the player at the top of their board was picked by one of the two teams before them
9.)    When he is evaluating or scouting a prospect, what are some things about a prospect’s “makeup” that would be an immediate red flag, resulting in removal from consideration?
a.    Which of these traits did Mr. Elias emphasize that he scout for?
10.)    What hit rate did Elias feel was acceptable for high draft choices making it to the majors?

A.) Solid, I mean, they essentially were on the same guys we  were on, so...  I'd have to take a closer look, but I felt picks at the top were strong and there were a couple guys later that should not have been available.
