At least Davis is so bad he'll probably be released.  The Tigers might have a Ryan Howard as their DH the next four years.  He's more expensive than Davis, and probably capable of OPSing .675 with no defensive responsibilities or skills forever.

I said that assuming they don't release Davis .

He’s better than Davis, but would you rather be on the hook for 3/$69 mm (with $21 mm of that deferred) or for 4/$124 mm?   Figure Cabrera the last 3 years has been right at replacement value, whereas Davis has been 4 wins below replacement.    I’d certainly rather have the Davis contract if I had the guts to cut him.   But if I was forced to play him a certain amount, then it’d be about a push.

Assuming you can't cut either of them, 4/124.  Cabrera should be better over that time.  If he can put up a .750 OPS and a 100 OPS+, fine.  Plus there are things to promote as he limps his way towards 500 career homers, etc.  And, if anything, I like Cabrera's chances to have one or two more really good throwback type of seasons WAY more than Davis' chances.

The 21 million deferred after the Davis contract is over isn't much on a per year basis but it is money that could be better spent elsewhere.  Plus every year on July 1st it's Bobby Bonilla day and there's articles ad nauseum about what it is and how it came to be.  It's embarrassing for the Mets, I'd rather not be embarrassed by continuing to have to pay for a bad decision for the next 15 years or however long it takes for that deferred part of the contract to run out.

Three scenarios for the final 15:

1. The Orioles collapse and overtake Detroit for the 1st pick.

2. The Orioles keep plodding along and end up with the 2nd pick.

3. The Orioles catch fire and end up passing the Marlins for the 3rd pick.

Which would you choose? I would easily choose the 3rd one.

One would wonder if the club makes a one time payment into an interest bearing account and let the deferred payments come out of it.

They essentially have to do this anyway.    A discounted sum has to be deposited 18 months after each season ends, which is calculated to grow into the amount to be paid when the deferred sum is due.

So lets say that can find Bonds or such with various mature dates that would follow out until the end of the deferment, could they not purchase these and have it over with with one lump sum???  Take a one year hit and be done.

To avoid a 100 loss season, all the O's have to do is run the table. Shouldn't be tough.

Careful, it’s not as hard as you might think. Their schedule isn’t that tough.

Three left vs Det, six vs Tor (three home and away), three vs Sea in between the Tor series and the last three vs Boston who obviously won’t be playing for anything.

I’d say eight wins might be possible.

Can they hit worse than we pitch, that's the question.
