Hays/Stewart/Mullins/Sisco

The Orioles homegrown youngsters are hitting a combined 4-51 (.078).  Hays has 3 of those hits but is only 3-28.  Stewart and Mullins yet to get a hit.

SSS of course, but not a great start for the O's farmhands.  Offense being carried by the waiver wire castoffs/journeymen.

Lets not go negative.  How about a positive look?

Sisco has caught both of Leblanc starts and the team has won both games.   Good game calling?  For a catcher his work behind the plate is more important than his hitting IMO.

Both Hays and Mullins have upgraded the outfield defense.   Mullins threw out a fat leadoff hitter at third last night.  That was a important out.  I seem to remember Mullins laying out to caught a ball in right field as well.   Hays' range and skill gives me confidence that he will cover the ground and catch the ball if he can be caught.

Stewart.  I got nothing.

Here is a question.  Is the fact that Mullins was in the outfield the reason the runner went?

Great that he got the out there but his arm isn't suddenly an asset.

I have little doubt that the Rays told their players to challenge Mullins’ arm.     He was up to the challenge this time.

As to the OP, it’s disappointing that these young players have started slowly, but it’s only 7 games, and we’re 4-3 so I’m not going to worry about it much.   Keep playing them and let’s see what happens.

I’ll stay with the positive vibe. Kind of a positive that we’re 4-3 with none of them hitting. I’m hopeful that Hays will sort it out but he needs a day off or two. Chance has hit everywhere in the minors - seems like our luck if he did doesn’t do it in the majors. DJ is a great kid personally but he’s in big trouble if Mountcastle shows soon and mashes.

Hopefully we’ll get enough answers about all of them in the next 50 games to make some decisions for next year.

Hays has been hitting the ball hard, but right at people.  He has also been robbed by a couple of web gems.  He's due to break out any time.

Mullins is a back up OF and is there for his glove.  It would be nice if he could hit, but I'm not expecting it.

I still have hope for Stewart and Sisco, but this is the year they have to prove they are major league players.

His eye has improved a lot but he still isn’t hitting and his defense remains...but if he keeps walking 3 times a game we can put up with him for a while longer.

It stands to reason that if he's being walked three times a game, no one is actually throwing him pitches that can be hit.

I too am disappointed that Chance Sisco's on-base percentage is a paltry .556.

His AB with one out and a runner on 3B in extra innings last night was pretty awful.   Swung right through two pitches that looked pretty hittable.   But overall, yeah it’s good that he’s getting on base.

Yeah, that was a rough at-bat, but there is just no way I am going to adjust my priors on the basis of a 3-7 game sample size.

My expectations outside of Hays in this group is pretty modest.

Stewart is the one with the biggest issue. Feels like his time here is getting squeezed. At some point Mountcastle will be up.... I think.

Of course if Davis never plays that helps him. I think the role Mullins has now suits him best. Sisco will keep playing this year.

Only guy I'm worried about here is Hays but he's been hitting the ball hard and his xBA is .260 so hopefully he'll turn it around.

Anything Sisco does is a bonus and Stewart is essentially a placeholder for Mountcastle or Diaz and I'd say he's even behind mullins on the list of guys to keep once the other two come up since he can't play CF.

Severino's defense is making Sisco look better.

Obviously, the performances have been disappointing so far, but the only one in the group who has looked far worse than I expected is Stewart. The others have looked, at times, like they have potential to be major leaguers (Mullins and Sisco as backups).

    • Melewski’s a little slow.  I saw that yesterday, elsewhere.
    • I wouldn’t trade Basallo or Mayo straight up for Crochet. We need a starter and Crochet may not be a starter the rest of the year and this work load could affect his arm next year as well. He’s just too much of a risk and may not help us win this year.  If we could use Kjerstad to headline a deal, I would think something could be worked out.  Personally, I doubt crochet is traded. Getz is going to overvalue him and teams aren’t going to part with a top 20 guy and a top 50 guy plus more.  It’s just not happening, as I said it wouldn’t for Cease. As for other pitchers, some of the Texas guys are certainly possible. Miami has some intriguing options potentially. I’m a Detmers guy, although he’s a bit of a project.(maybe big BP help this year) I am also more about improving the pen first. End of the day, do I want Fedde starting game 3 of a playoff series?  As of today, I’m not sure I do so I don’t want to trade assets for that guy.
    • Gibson is being promoted to Aberdeen, per Melewski.
    • Is O’Hearn that much worse than Mountcastle at 1B?  I don’t think so.
    • I understand your case and logic for Skubal  . I do like him too . However I question whether the Tigers will trade him and secondly , is Elias willing pay the high costs to acquire him ?  Knowing Elias , I’m not sure 🤷‍♂️
    • But that’s my point, who are all these flawless options?  By no means do you have to trade for our guys, but it’s not a stellar group of starting pitchers.  You’ll likely take on some risk with whomever you acquire.  I don’t like taking specific comments and then generalizing the whole board, but there is quite a bit of nitpicking going on from a large group of posters on almost all the SP options not named Skubal as well as some overvaluing of your lesser prospects who are unlikely to get something of value.  Getting an impactful SP in this market is going to hurt one way or the other, you just have to decide what trade offs are you willing to take. I do appreciate your viewpoints because you seem capable of saying something might be fair in terms of value, but at the same time not be a trade you’d actually make.  Personally, I think Crochet would be a massive coup for you guys at the price I just mentioned, but I can respect if you feel he’s too risky.  I’m not sure there will another SP like him available in terms of potential impact and now is the time you guys should really be going for it.
