I'm Ready for Mountcastle and Diaz: Mountcastle Up, Diaz Still Waiting

Ryan Mountcastle has objectively poor walk rates in AAA and people are like "he has nothing left to learn in AAA".

I just don't understand.

Put him up in the Majors and watch him struggle with walking AND hitting. That'll fix him. That's my grandpa's approach to swimming lessons; he just tosses you out of the boat.

If you wait for every player to have no discernible issues whatsoever the Orioles may be ready come 2030. This is also invalidated by every player above him arguably being no better.

I'm sure they could. If Elias felt that was appropriate, I'm sure he would.

At the end of the day I will readily admit that having Mountcastle here would make the current team a little more watchable.

That definitely impacts my opinion and it’s not a lack of trust in Elias but at some point a 23 year old who has had 5 years of pro ball needs a chance to play.

I still feel like there's no facsimile for MLB pitching, and hope there will be opportunity for him to see the Age 29 Cole and Age 26 Glasnow fastballs, if only for the context of how they are a little tamer two to three years from now when it might really matter for him to be able to hit them.

A healthy Top 100-ish prospect repeating AAA after the level of success he had is a pretty rare circumstance these days.  Certainly if it holds this way Mountcastle 2020 will be an early and interesting data point to follow to validate if there is anything to the clubs' contention we want to junk a whole bunch of minor league baseball so the few that matter get lion's shares of developmental resources.

Regardless of how we all feel I would hope Elias’ decision is not based on wanting to see more of the Dwight Smith’s of the world.

I would hope it is all about what they think is best for him and not who is above him.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that Mountcastle will improve his walk rate in the majors over what he did in the minors.

He won't walk a lot but he will walk a sufficient amount of the time.

Might take a bit but he'll get there.

Since he's at a theoretical minimum he almost has to improve.  I think he peaks around 40-50 walks a year if he hits .280 with power.

Plate discipline basically gets better from the day a player enters the league.  Normally.  It's the exact opposite of speed or fastball velocity.

Mountcastle has no discernable issues and all those who thought he did will soon bandwagon.

I don't even believe you know what this means. How do you quantify "hurt by AAA competition" because he wasn't called up to more difficult level? This is some boogeyman catch phrase people use because they're upset and don't have a real argument for why.

He’s hurt by his current competition, which is scrimmages and batting practice. Nice use of quotes, try not putting words in my mouth.

I keep hoping by September some of these guys will be here. They have to make 40 man decisions on some of these guys anyway.

And none of those guys are players you worry about service time.

You just go with them.  Throw them out and see what happens.  I suspect many of them would have been up by now anyway, in a normal season.

I was really looking forward to this team this year by this point in the season.  The team I was hoping to see could be out there right now.
