The ex-Orioles lineup vs the Orioles lineup

It's actually player development.  None of the prospects traded by Duquette were highly regarded at the time except for Eduardo Rodriguez.  Jake Arrieta's star had faded.  Zach Davies was a borderline top 20 prospect for a terrible farm.  Josh Hader was a lottery pick.

Davies was a much better prospect than that.   Going into 2015 (the year he was traded), OH ranked him our no. 4 prospect, BP no. 6, Sickels no. 7, Prospect Digest no. 4.    He did nothing to hurt his status in 2015, posting a 2.84 ERA at Norfolk at age 22 before he was traded.    I’m not saying everyone was on board, but that was due to Davies’ size, not anything the Orioles had failed to do in his development.    He was a valuable prospect who Duquette foolishly traded away for two months of Gerardo Parra.

That to me is what makes the Cardinals what they are, their ability to consistently compete while also bringing up ML ready prospects.  They don't go binary vets and competitive vs. Prospects and not very often, and they do so with moderate but not disgusting payrolls.

And they cheat.
