Roster spot scarcity.   You need someone to back up SS.   There's probably only room for one backup infielder (plus Chris Davis) on the 26 man roster.

But are you really going to lose anything by having Valaika as the backup SS rather than Martin?  If yes, the overall difference probably isn't significant.
