And Plutko just proved you the fool.

On the contrary, it just proved me right. You don’t leave your starter in too long, you take heed when your starter, even your best starter, has a sloppy inning, even if he recovers. Means ended the 6th at 87 pitches. He did well in the sixth, but still, time to come out.
And you have to trust your bullpen. If Plutko is bad, well. He’s bad. If you only go with him because you feel you’ve no other choice, well, that’s all the more reason to let him start a clean inning. Plus, if you bring him in with a man on, he STILL must face three guys regardless of how bad he is. And look. Plutko faced his three, gave up three runs, one of which was charged to Means, and departs with a tie game. And turns things over to Scott... what fun THAT is going to be.

So yes, that confirms the often-repeated problem of leaving the starter in too long.

Here’s an idea: if the pen is bad, bring up guys from the minors. Plutko isn’t having anyone’s baby, he can go to DFA heaven, and so can Armstrong, Lakins, and anyone else who is lousy. If the minors guys are lousy too, well, at least you find out now.
