We’ve done nothing but lose, and resemble an expansion team at the MLB level. So I think in year 3, it’s fair to question Elias just a bit. Especially when Elias has gone against the consensus picks in 2/3 drafts and doesn’t draft pitching at all. Fair to criticize.

I agree with the questioning of Elias, especially in putting together an actual ML team and the drafting of pitching. I would say a lot of teams go against the consensus of publications like BA, so I’m not even going to consider that.

He also took two OFs over SS/NCAA LHSP.

He’s gone out on a limb big time. So far he’s only successfully show that he knows how to dump salary and get top draft picks.

It’s not defeatist over one top 100 list. Publications and pre draft lists aren’t always right. See GrayRod vs Liberatore. However, that was a DD regime pick.

All I’m pointing out is,

2021: Cowser + Creed Willems over Lawler or Watson

2020: Kjerstad + Mayo + Baumler over Martin or Lacy

I think Rhodes also received over slot money.

Is Elias' plan eventually to trade surplus outfield talent for pitching arms? There is a lot more focus on Grayson Rodriguez and DL Hall to be good because if they're not it could be awhile waiting on other pitching prospects.

I just don’t see the appeal of Austin Martin. Apparently the team that drafted him doesn’t either. Calling him a SS is way overselling him. Is he even a 2B?

I was hoping for Lawlar when he fell, but I’ll give Elias the benefit of the doubt with the drafts for now. They clearly have a game plan in this area and we have to trust him to carry it out

I noticed down around 80 Hall, Henderson and Cowser were all clumped give or take a few spots.

With the flattening of the curve after the first handful of really special talents, that's basically saying they are even from here.   It'll be interesting to see how that trio shakes out by the end of the year - whether Hall ends up circa 3rd or circa 5th on offseason lists really doesn't have anything to do with him these next 2 months.

If you look at the list it seems a lot of players by the same team are clumped together.

Prospect for prospect trades rarely happen but I think Elias will be quick to trade established big leaguers (Mullins, Santander, etc.) for pitching prospects once their value peaks if there are younger cheaper options on the way in (Stowers, Cowser, and others).

I don't see any other way of doing it since we aren't drafting pitchers and all of our pitching prospects currently in the upper levels have command issues minus Grayson Rodriguez or fringy stuff (see Wells, Lowther, Rom).

I don’t remember anyone pining for Detmers but I could be wrong. 7 teams passed on him after the O’s.

Detmers added 5-6 mph on his fastball last year. He's much improved from draft time.

Hall is injured right now, and he walks too many guys, but he has had success at a higher level, he is the clear #3 for me.

True, but we could still trade from a surplus of good young outfielders for established ML pitching.  Like Houston trading for Verlander.

The headliner in the Verlander trade was a pitching prospect and another was a catcher.

I don't think that it is easy to pull off a Verlander style trade.  I also question if ownership would be willing to take that type of contract onboard.

2021: You're going by pre-draft rankings. First look at Cowser makes us feel good, but it's way too soon to know.

2020: You're judging by a freak ailment that happened after the draft. Could have happened to anyone. What if we drafted Martin and he produced like he is or Lacy and he got the myocarditis? If anything, that justifies taking Kjerstad and seeing what we have with Mayo (very nice so far) and Baumler.

I wonder if Mike’s logic goes like this:

The success rate of Pitching is so low, It is better to let other teams take the risk, and suffer the failures, and trade for their almost-successes. Drafting Lacy means you get Lacy’s current problems, But if Lacy does well, you can trade for him, Provided you’re prepared to pay a lot.

I’m not sure that’s really a good strategy, but it would certainly seem to fit with what Mike is actually doing.

    • Some might call it arrogance, others might call it resolve. I think it's as simple as identifying a problem/situation, analyzing it to the best of your ability and that of the resources at your disposal, reaching a conclusion, and sticking to that decision. Beyond that, Elias will learn when and how to adjust as he gains experience in the #1 chair.  Honestly, I don't even have any gripes with him at the moment. We all wanted Holliday up, then he stunk. Then we all wanted Mayo up, then he stunk. So who are we complaining about now? I can't even keep up. Not to derail, but it's the same unfair criticism that Hyde is facing on this board. Manager and GM sure have become thankless responsibilities around here. And I know how you all talk about Harbaugh on the football board, too. I'm not apologist for any of them, but I do admire the fact that they've been able to build a championship-caliber club and maintain it through all of the injury adversity we've faced. This board is quick to point out mistakes, but is terrible at giving credit where credit is due, and having the most wins in the American League as we sit here on September 6 deserves a bunch of credit.
    • Great example, even if we only kept him for part of the season.  Holzman was one of those guys whose success defined explanation, especially by current standards.  He went 5 - 4 for us with a tidy 2.86 ERA... but he allowed 100 hits in 97 innings and allowed more walks (35) than KOs (25).
    • Is it really more difficult? Much more?    To this O’s fan, the 1970s were a lot “easier” than the 2000s.
    • That seems to require that Dominguez would be the better contributor.
    • I live in California and prices for games in SF and Oakland change day-to-day. That is just normal in 2024, any price is only the price at the moment.
    • https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2024/09/yankees-rumors-jasson-dominguez-alex-verdugo-left-field.html   this is a fascinating article about the Yankees refusal to call up extremely promising prospect Jasson Dominguez to replace extremely disappointing veteran Alex Verdugo. On one hand, Cashman was willing to go public with management disagreement about whether to call up Dominguez and is personally(along with Aaron Boone) taking responsibility for not doing so, so kudos for that. On the other hand, he didn’t really give any reason for not making the change, so we’re left to just assume that it is stubbornness or ego. Over in Baltimore, Elias has, arguably, made similar mistakes. I share because I think this illustrates that, individual skills and talents aside, every GM suffers from a certain arrogance that renders them unable to admit a mistake or to address it in a timely or effective manner. after several years of remaking, the organization, for which Elias deserves much praise, he’s now in a different phase, and that phase is addressing problems and maintaining the success of the last couple of years. And that’s much more difficult. We can only hope that he makes adjustments as necessary.
