Maybe add that 5th starter. Did anyone interesting opt out? Maybe a waiver claim. Or maybe just clearing Mattson while it was easier to get him through, anticipating doing that anyway. Should have added Bannon to that move.

Gets traded over here with great minor league numbers, then gets shelled in few ML outings, then DFAd after getting injured, then slowly fades into irrelevance in the minors.

I never understood including him on the 40-man roster and then keeping him for another offseason made even less sense.

I don't think this move is to make room for anyone.  Opening Day,  right after rosters are set,  is just the best time to get him through waivers.

Yeah he was always the most at risk guy on the 40 man. Might as well just do it now.

I do think it was a good time to waive him. 

I heard speculation that Spencer Watkins could come up soon, depending on how the pen survives Tampa.
