Well, that was a laughable display of all things outfield, but I’ll focus on the wall for now. 

372’ and 382’ “fly balls” land harmlessly in the Oakland LF’ers glove from Rutschman and Hays, respectfully.  Both were… not amused.

Yep, wall cost three runs.

You’d think the home team would adjust to their home stadium’s dimensions better than their opponents who play there only a few games a year.

The announcers mentioned that Adley’s first inning fly out only would have been a homer in 3 of 30 stadiums.  Hays’ hit would have been a homer in 29 of 30.

It is maddening.  But you just have to assume it will even itself out over time.

The only way it wouldn't would be if the O's were a superior offensive team to the aggregate visiting team.  So I guess actually that would be alright.

Pretty sure we benefited by quite a bit last year.

No, it cost us 4 more homers than it cost our opponents IIRC.

We had to do this fast. So, the quickest and most expedient way to do it was just to take that part of left field and push it back,” Elias said. “It’s kind of maybe a crude way of doing it, but we wanted to do it soon because we thought it was gonna help us win. I think over the next few years, as we renovate Camden Yards, we’ll probably look at ways of smoothing this out but keeping it a pitchers’ park.”

 

Still, Angelos, like Elias, left the door open for outfield dimensions to be reconfigured again in the near future.

“Let’s say it didn’t work out,” Angelos said. “Well, then you’d have to change it. It would be unfortunate because of X-million (spent). But you can’t be afraid to let your best people make decisions in the field.”

Did the wall change cost the Orioles any games last season? I’m not remembering any but maybe someone kept track.

I am surprised that MLB does not set parameters for distances for outfield fences.    All my life I have wondered why dimensions can be set willy nilly rather than one standard dimension for all of the teams to all of the three fields. They meddle in far less important things, but I have not heard of parameters being standardized by MLB.
